i like the design awareness many european culture do.
also whenever i go to international exhibition, dutch designers get together and showcase their stuff, this also goes with some swedish designers.
when i went to tokyo designer's block, there's a show in sweden embassy.
i can't possibly imagine american embassy ever supporting designers.

My toilet is covered with Caulfield & Tensing Chemistry flyer-stickers. Those were pretty cool back in the days.

(May 10 05, 10:13)that's a major difference between europe and north america in terms of cultural funding. in namerica is supposed that design and art should be like private enterprise and exist on their own for the purpose of the economy. europe recognizes that cultural funding leads to better economy through spin off revenues.
it's something that a group of us out here are trying to get the gov't to understand. that design is a rich export. not only in terms of culture but as a commodity. it's a tough sell though. in canada the best exports are still lumber and minerals.
design up here is having an imteresting impact in other ways: http://www.fastcompany.com/magaz…

sigh. yeah da days. that group (c&t, goodwill, dept and 75b) must be the most notorious one though. they moved mountains on almost every level. nothing really worthwhile happened since then if you ask me but that's just a matter of taste. radical stuff happened back then. kind of went downhill so i'd agree with janne on the 99 peak. sad that they are gone but also good that they are gone if you know what i mean. move over for the new blood. and i'm still waiting.

k77,
at the Tokyo Designer's Block, I went to Canadian Embassy for the show. It was pretty good. It was weird that security was almost none existant. maybe it's tokyo thing, here in america, you won't be able to walk in that easy.regardless, it's sad that american government don't see the full implication on this issue.

tkmeister, what was shown at the canadian embassy?

"that's a major difference between europe and north america in terms of cultural funding. in namerica is supposed that design and art should be like private enterprise and exist on their own for the purpose of the economy. europe recognizes that cultural funding leads to better economy through spin off revenues"
---------word on that.

canada used to sit somewhere between europe and america, and i think is slowly going the american route. dutch design will continue to rule. :)
