I agree, and specifically: Dutch typography, impresses me.

speaking of the dutch can't wait for their redesign to be done.

that's all really nice.. but i always wonder if it is good to just look at Dutch design and say: oooh it is sooo good...
i mean, isn't it time to define your own brilliance?
it's great to take this as inspiration, but it makes it so competition like..
as if there is no good design in the US for instance..
well there's a lot of crap coming from there, but there's also a huge amount of rubbish being made in the Netherlands, but you don't see it..There's great designers here, just as there are great designers in the UK, Italy, US etc.etc.
it has also a lot to do with the fact that the govt. used(!) to spend a lot of taxmoney on design- and art-initiatives..
so many artists with great independent works that are not so commercially interesting could spend time on their projects while still having some money to live etc.
i wonder if this is/was the case in a lot of other countries..
perhaps an interesting topic for discussion..

that's kind of what impresses me. my initial link lays out an amazing agenda by the dutch for the exportation of dutch design. to me, even beyond the high quality of the work, is very important. i think the gov't feeding creativity and allowing designers and artists to do it and then have a machine in place to promote is very very impressive. it makes it easier for cats like http://www.marcelwanders.nl/ and http://www.tordboontje.com/ to do their thing.
this type of support isn't happening in many countries. it's not the case in Canada.

that's a very interesting point you bring up.
the success of anything Dutch was consistently fed by the dependance of other nations..
ah, it's early here...
:Dwhat i am trying to say is: NL has always been a trading nation as we do not have valuable natural resources such as oil, gold etc.
perhaps this international - extroverted - attitude of the Dutch is key here.
for instance:
The Dutch Dept. for Economic Affairs would (sometimes heavily IMHO) finance dj's to be able to spin tables abroad, as they saw the Dutch successes in the dance/house/techno scene as a valuable trading good..perhaps that's even more important then the direct financing of artists to create work within NL..
but ofcourse one cannot exist without the other..

Vburo, I think its really interesting that government but also company in holland invest in design, and more important, in young creators.
I was in milano for the salone and I was impressed by the work of design accademy eindhoven and collection of brands like mooi.
It seems that they like the challenge and they take the risk to invest in new ideas..In italy is the opposite, there are many good young designer but companies and institution doesnt care.. for instance during the salone week in the Triennale (the main Design museum of milano) there were 4 exhibition:
Enzo Mari (age 73)
Alessandro Mendini (74)
Ettore sottsass (88)
Gaetano Pesce (66)I mean big respect to their work, but there are many other young designer who deserves some more attention...
so... go dutches!!

"The Dutch Dept. for Economic Affairs would (sometimes heavily IMHO) finance dj's to be able to spin tables abroad, as they saw the Dutch successes in the dance/house/techno scene as a valuable trading good."
^ that is very interesting.

it is k77, but i don't think it happens at all anymore.. economy went down the drain..
For the record:
Droog Design is not a company that designs this stuff. It's 2 women inviting great Dutch designers to work on various assignments.. so it's more of an organization..

I love the Stedelijk museum collateral, actually saw a great exhibit called "Mark" there in September too...
I think the one thing to remember as well, is the culture surrounding the artists. Europe in general is much more liberal and forward thinking when it comes to design and advertising than North America..
