I know. But nowdays, in the furniture field companies like Cassina, Kartell etc. look for young designer as in Italy as abroad, and generally isn't so bad.
The problem is in communication design: 3 or 4 big companies (like Kora, Iconmedialab, Inferentia DNM and few others) with big clients and a lot of small agencies (like the one where i am in) that have small and hard clients, typically family run factories with bad attitude for design and communication. Very little research on typefaces and media experiments. Some schools, like Politecnico di Milano (www.design.polimi.it) are triyng tu build a "system" for design, companies and designers, but it's a hard and long way. Moreover consider that design is a recent matter of study (the firs degree course was opened 10 years ago) before, the designer was used to be first an architect

Fariska

"The dutch have been wearing wooden shoes since the thirteenth century and millions of farmers, children, artisans, working people and gardeners still wear them every day, keeping up a beautiful tradition!"
what a big fat lie btw.
- Fariska0
LOL, i see. Traslating the text back in english, i did undestand and agree with stem.
But, just a moment, i'm working since three months :-)

I hear they are pretty big in the shipping industry too...
I think they are a remarkable bit of kit - like you say, they have stood the test of time.
Having siad that, I think I'd opt for a 'nuchter' pair, nothing to flashy, like yellow with windmills.
- kelpie0
what a big fat lie btw.

(May 24 05, 06:40)!!gasp!!
you've just shattered my pleasing mental image of vb_ operating his mac inside a windmill in a big old pair of wooden shoes. Bugger :(

Fariska - I understand, probably best to just get a few more years under your belt before you go down that road.
