thanks guys, esp info for those links and town suggestions.
i'm looking to live in the mountains, and i really don't care if the house is a tiny shack. i just want it for a place to "get away from it all", not for a year round dwelling.
i'm going to try to go down there sometime this summer and explore...if i do it would be awesome to meet ya'll NC folks.
would my belongings be safe if i left them there for a while, say a few months? i've heard bad news about some places ie. tennessee where you can't leave your house for periods of time or it will get looted...

anzelina - you could always rent it while your not there, and by using a property management type place, they could keep an eye on your stuff.
by the way... asheville is the THE place to live in the mountains.

there's only small sharks in NC. i have a picture with one. oh and jellyfish. my brother got stung by one on his back and it look like he'd just gotten beat with a canepole. AND last year my bro and I went out for a night swim and saw an electric eel. other than that tho it's totally safe. and SO worth it. ask any surfer

NC sucks for web dev jobs, rdu and charlotte are so saturated. and the work they produce for the most part sucks also.

Hatteras is the place for surfing...it's actually rideable year round, but it goes off in the winter + you have the breaks all to yourself...it's scary.
NC beaches are some of the best, hands down.

yeah 4 years ago when i was at hatteras it was just pumping huge one day. set after set after set. the locals were going off. some great riders out there. i can't remember exactly where it was - i think it was south of rodanthe but north of waves a bit. nice spot.
