so i kind of want to get a house down there. i'm thinking of a small cottage type house, in the mountains, for around $30,000.
i'd use it for a summer home / studio / whatever, slowly fix it up.
anyone from down there have tips? where is a place i could live in the mountains and be far from people? if i did this is it safe? would my home be at danger of looting while i was gone?
any info plz!

yeah, 30K would be a down payment, but very nice in NW NC.

honestly, NC is very nice, used to vacation in Wilmington and Topsail Island, but that's close to SC and in the SE.

anzelina, it's not a bad idea. problem is a lot of people got that idea and housing is crazy expensive here now. 30 won't get you far unless, like others said, that's your downpayment. i live near gruntt, in the mountains of NC. it's great here. but you might wanna plan for about $120k+ to start. me and gruntt can probably answer your questions if you have more.

I live in the Sandhills region, which is midway from the moutains to the beaches.
The North Carolina mountains and beaches truly are some of the prettiest in the world.

I'm from NC...so good luck finding a (livable) shack for 30K! Even in the mountains those fools know what property is worth. Not saying it isn't out there waitng for you...but would you want to live in a barn? There's no hi-speed internet lines either, better get a telegraph.
