I bought a brand new 2,000 sq. ft. home here in North Carolina for $130,000...
finding a home for $30,000 might be nearly impossible, but some homes in the mountains really are small.
I wouldn't want to personally buy a home that small though.

People have been watching too much TV.
NC is the 2nd largest financial district in the US, next to SF. There are like 3 major banks in Charlotte with HQ there, loads of $$. It's not like the movie "Deliverance."

Everyone has a Rover or a Mercedes here, except for me.

north carolina definitely has money. for a while there, the triangle had the most millionaires per square mile than anywhere else in the U.S.

It's cool there are so many NC peeps...makes me miss home. Except in the summer where it's so hot and muggy, you wish you were dead. But spring in NC is where the goodness is!

I'm arriving late, but I really miss NC. Lived in Charlotte for 18 years until I moved to Savannah 4 years ago.
But you are not totally cut off in the Appalachians. Check out the Lake Lure area or Pigion Forge. Also Spruce Pine. Tiny, southern, beautiful towns with high speed internet.
