what's funny is ms has once again delayed longhorn. longhorn now is nothing compared to the feature list they tried to sell users and developers. they've removed and changed winfs. they've left out most of the 'cutting edge' features. they've spent time and money back-porting everything to xp so they have something to actually release. it's vaporware. it's half-life2 all over again. it'll be another 2 years before the final version is sent out...and then, wait...there will be a service pack shortly after to "fix" all the holes in the initial distro.
and, scalable icons? who gives a fuck? linux has had that for a long time now. kde and gnome both have svg themes...gorrila being the most notable. if that's your sales pitch...here's a quarter, go buy a technology education.
mevsthem, your fanboy rhetoric is about as well informed as a hooker teaching classes on celibacy.
longhorn is a joke. especially next to a strong unix system like osx. and the growing support of linux. ms should go back to what it does...errr...best...selling the xbox.

I was wondering how long it was going to take for sparker to talk about linux.
- sparker0
ok, i'll talk about windows...i like 2000 server and 2000 pro. i like xp pro. i hate win9x/me and xp home.
3.x was revolutionary.
ms's mistake with windows was removing the dos component to it. we still use a freedos box here for our voicemail software. antiquated, i know...but as an admin i can't argue with a system that a) never crashes and b) runs that well on older hardware.
we have 2000 servers running. they never give me trouble. the xp pro workstations however crash a lot...but that is user related.

Unnecessary Evil
The control features for the black box is disturbing. I hope a new alternative os comes and saves us all.

I was just busting your balls a bit sparker, you help a lot of peeps out around here and I appreciate it.

i have to admit, though, the idea behind transactional ntfs seems cool.
it will help with some of the problems i experience when moving large data stores across the lan.

im not selling the concept you dumb fuck. im posintg it cause its a new GUI sorry if software dosn't inspire you or if u don't get to work on UI.

Longhorn = Fischer Price at a Horror Show
- sparker0
it is xp with some "enhancement." enhancement that *other* systems have been using already.
other than the iconfactory icons...looks like a poorly designed xp rehash.
the important part of longhorn is/was the backend technology...which has been hacked-n-slashed so much now that it's not really that impressive.
some gems here and there, though. like i said...transactional ntfs will help problems with server crashes during GB data moves between servers.
we push TB's of data weekly here, and when one of the xp workstations crashed during a move it corrupts data everytime. seems like trans. ntfs might ease that suffering a bit, from what i've read anyway.
but, that's a tiny piece in a much larger system...which by all accounts still seems like crap.
