now take this with a grain of salt because I heard this second hand at my art school BUT aparently as Adobe has aquired Macrormedia and redundent and obsolete software series are being cut (ie freehand and GoLive), adobe has decided to cut all Mac development after all slated 05 projects are completed. if this is true this is huge for the design world. i guess adobe is looking into development for linux. dont laugh. i guess they are totally serious. it costs a lot less to produce for linux than it does mac or windows.

then they would go broke, doubt that will happen.
- abstrakt0
i doubt it would happen, but adobe does favor the windows machine. after all, it was adobe who posted the article on their website showing statistics on how their software runs faster on pc than mac. although this did piss off the mac community (cause they're lunatics) so adobe took down the article.

one thing is for macromedia software runs much faster on windows machines. i run dreamweaver on an old celeron machine that i just use to browse. same program on my G5 lags when im typing in a div.

total fucking bullshit. it would put them dead in the water.
- jpea0
wouldn't put them dead in the water though. they have much more market share on windows machines than on the mac, across the board of their apps too, not just PS. simply a numbers game i would suppose.

They may drop Freehand simply because they already have illustrator. It wouldent make much sense to dev two of the same applications.
They would never drop Apple support. It simply wouldent happen. It would be like cutting off Canada's water supply or something... intresting thought, but mindless none the less.

i think its mixture of the fact that windows has a dominant marketshare, mac devolpment, consumption and well pretty much everything is more expensive. as windows becomes more reliable and creatively friendly (ie longhorn possibly) i think you might see a split. i was suprised to hear from this kid. said he knew people at adobe. dont wanna spread mistruths just passing on what i heard.

it won't happen. it's a bad business decision. yeah, they stopped making premiere for mac but that's because they realized they can't compete with finalcut pro.
don't worry, they will keep providing us whatever we need.
- jpea0
just curious though, but why couldn't they drop apple support? if it's not cost effective to develop apps for it, why not cut it? i mean, yeah, we all use apple hardware (mostly), but we're a pretty small group in the overall computing world. take in the numbers and see i guess. different industries migrate towards the most suitable product.
for instance: i worked for the major game publisher for the mac, and on the marketing side, yeah, like 70% of us used a mac, but on the dev side, out of 30 dev's, 1 guy used a mac. all the designers used PS and Max on their PC's. it was cost effective. that, coming from a mac publisher.
i'm not wanting to see adobe leave the platform or anything, but they're now a huge company with a huge share on the pc end of things. they'll follow the numbers and i wouldn't be surprised if they dropped it.

adobe won't leave the mac platform, but they will phase out/combine certain apps for pc's only. in all honesty, its an apple problem. web dev and 3D software runs like shit on even the most tricked out G5, and my guess iis that within 10-15 years web/motion design will have fully eclipsed print/static design as the primary function of graphic designer. so, in essence, adobe is hedging their bets on this and other similar facts.
- toe_knee0
I'd laugh it they did
- toe_knee0
id laugh if i could spell if
- jpea0
again though, why is it so farfetched that adobe will leave the mac platform? i'm not shooting for it, but it seems like infallible or something to this community. (of which i'm part i suppose)
- toe_knee0
everyone doubted microsoft would stop developing ie for the mac but they did
- robbie_m0
mac payed adobes salaries back in the day. all the prepress houses ect in the 90's. if they stopped, id go old school and paste up instead of print design on a fucking winders box

heads at apple make good applications! but W.T.F. do they expect Adobe to do sit there and let them ram it into there asses? Apple made final cut... Adobe stopped making Premier on Mac... Apple created Motion.. Adobe is going to pull After affects sooner or later... although I'm a strictly Mac head... I think hey should not screw over Adobe like this... if Apple creates a photoshop equivalent... I will lose my mind.. I love Apple but enough is enough

apple would buy adobe first
- forcetwelve0
be kinda funny if they did drop freehand - especially when DR advertised for another designer...
"and remember - illustrator - not freehand!"

What wuold be wrong with adobe having a little competition? At the moment now more than ever they have a monopoly
