In Chronological order:
Opening keynote was good, was happy to see a lot of the additions to Flash. The improvements in the rendering are really good to see, especially for the Mac platform. The blending modes were also a nice addition, but I could see that getting out of hand a little.
Erik Falat presentaion has some good parts, but I was expecting to see a little more work. I think he showed 5 or so pieces of work and 1 or 2 of them weren’t his.
Veronique Bossier's pres on colour I didn't really like. It was labeled as a creative presentation so I was hoping to maybe see a bit of theory, usage of colour combo's and the like but it was more focused on colour in flash and the actionscript behind it. There was also a bit of a weird part when she was demonstrating how to make custom palettes and struggled to add a swatch.
Geoff Lillemon's Oculart presentation was good, I had never seen his work before so that was pretty cool. He had a very unique style in his art, and the way he incporated flash was interesting, in particular the input of movements into a webcam to control sounds and movement in flash using max. Although he seemed to run out of things to talk about and it kinda had to be stretched out to fill the time frame.
Geek Graffiti by Evan Roth was awesome, and really funny. Good ideas of incorporating the computer into graffiti culture and making his mark. Really great stuff.
The Upso/Gura/Hall presentation on Gravity I thought was interesting, and was a really unique way of incorporating scripted movements and information design to illustrate relationships between Jemma and Upso as well as their other collaborations. The gravity project I thought was really cool without a doubt and I am looking forward to the launch, but towards the end middle of the presentation I started to loose a bit of interest. Spoke to upso on the last day and he was really approachable and generous guy.
I do not know that much about actionscipt so I tended to stick to the creative presentations but I decided I would check out the Keith Peters presentation the next day. I understood what he was talking about and he explained a lot of the movements you could do with actionscript and the advantages of using them. Definitely stuff I can apply to my work in flash. Was also a very clear speaker.
Margot Knights presentation was also good, It was very nice to see a photographer there showing a different perspective on creativity in the midst of all the designers and developers. I met her at Bridge and talked for a while, very nice person! Very unique photos.
Jesse Seppi from Tronic studios I wasn’t impressed with. I thought a lot of the 3-d work looked poor combined with real footage and wasn’t really digging the work. His commentary was rather the same for each piece "This project was alot of fun....this was the goal of the project"
Robert Hodgins was awesome, it was a great intro for those who did not know too much about processing, like me. Lots of entertaining experiments, and he was really a fluent speaker.
Robert Peter's presentation was more focused on design in the global sense in all of the design disciplines. A lot of touching images and it really made me think. He gave me an evil look at one point in the presentation as I sat there which was super weird. Although he could have cut down on the quotes in his presentation.
James Patterson was hilarious, lots of good work he showed, and kept the audience laughing about stuff. He was an awesome guy too, spoke to him at Bride and a couple times at the event. Ended up buying a shirt from him too. Only downside was that his presentation was very similar to last years.
David Carson... well I didn’t enjoy this presentation at all. I guess this one was really subjective because I don’t really agree with a lot of his design philosophies so it sort of turned me off from a lot of the things he was talking about. It was also weird that his thing was entitled Graphic Design After The End of Print, yet it seemed like a good portion of the work was all from the time of Raygun. I ended up leaving after he started going way overtime.
Jared Tarbell’s presentation was also really good. Showed lots of his work and how complex things were really just built of simple things. Was an interesting way to see things, and his projects demonstrated this quite well. Good speaker and a really nice guy. Talked to him and his wife at Bridge, and they were super cool.
Dean Di Simones presentation I really enjoyed, hes is a really cool guy, and his partner Cory. Met him last year and remembered me last year at Bridge, also a super nice guy, and funny. The whole push to use all 3 dimensions to show data was really thought provoking and it would be nice to see more of this. He showed some examples of this and then went onto some of his client work. I sort of drifted off just before this for about 5 or 10 minutes, I felt really bad about that, but it was uncontrollable due to the lack of sleep I had the night before. Client work was great and I am looking forward to seeing new work by their studio Crimson. I will quote Dean here: “Don't fuck with me man...I saw you sleeping in my presentation!!!!!!!”
Bradley Grosh, not a huge fan of his stuff but some of the things he showed were really cool. He was also one of the funnier presenters, and I enjoyed my time there.
Josh Davis presentation was pretty cool. The section on colour I found appealed to me and was much more useful than the session on Colour on day 1. Was cool to see his new work and as always, included humor in his talk. It really started to get interesting when he showed his process to the 3-dimensional stuff, and I was dying to see how he was going to work in the content of the website into this. The presentation sort of ended after that so I was a little disappointed but now I am pumped to see the result of this site. Good look into his process.
They saved the best for last here, Yugop was outstanding. All of his work has a really unique experience to it. The TRL site was off the hook, I had seen it before but it has been a while and I never realized he was the one who did it. Amazing work and I think a lot of interactive designers could learn a lot from this guy. One of the few who really puts his experiments to work in practical projects.
