Done some research on this recently:

I have a Sony Vaio GRT which was almost top of the range until recently. It's been great and the screen is amazing. Most clients comment on it since it makes everything look slick. (But beware, since web sites that look good on the Sony look not so good on other machines!) I have to check everything (colour etc) on CRT monitors just in case. The sony also anti-aliases the text in web browsers which makes everything look smooth.

Only bad things are the screen started flickering a few months ago - although that now appears to have "self corrected" so fingers crossed. It's also very heavy.

Recently (yesterday) purchased a Toshiba Notebook AL30(?) which seems OK although nowhere near as powerful or slick as the Sony but then it was 1/3rd the cost.

If you want PB comparison I'd say Sony was the best option but Toshiba probably close second.

IBMs are very functional and (I think) look good because they are functional. Kind of like a Landrover Defender if you like that kind of thing then the style is all bound into the utilitarian design.

It's really a question of budget with the Sony though since they are expensive.

    This my very first port......anyway..

    STAY AWAY FROM TOSHIBA!!

I got a Toshiba laptop over a year ago and I've had nothing but problems with this thing since the first week.
For example the computer does not shut down. it always restarts itself automatically every single time. I've had problems with the hard drive, the OS, the Cd drive, the screen (dead pixels) and a lot of shit inside the computer I didn't even know they existed.

I have sent the computer 8 times for repair and everytime I was promised to get a replacement if the repair didn't work.....and of course they did not work and I didn't get a replacement.
The hard drive was replaced once, the cd drive 3 times, the motherboard....pretty much the inside of the computer has been replaced completely.
Plus, they damaged my computer a few times and returned it to me with those damages not fixed. They had to replace one speaker, the main body, the detachable kewboard because of their damages. It still has a couple of bumps they did not fix.

Their costumer support is horrible. Their office is somewhere in the middle east, and their workers' accents hard to understand. I asked niely several times to replace it and they did not do anything about. We had many conversations and arguments and this didn't seem to work.

I had to finally complain with 2 BBS and the FTC, and never got a replacement. They have a really bad record with the BBS.

Right now it still doesn't work well. It shuts down everytime I use it. If use the internet it might last up to an hour without shuting down, but if I use photoshop it doesn't last more than 30 minutes.

Well, this is my experience, it might not happen to you, but can happen.
As to me I'll never buy another Toshiba product in my life.

I would suggest IBM too. Although Jeedub is right, Dell does some plus sides, even tho they are giant. I think some of them have some pretty intense resolutions that alot of laptops lack, such as the powerbook.

IBM though has really good tech support from looking at my fathers experience and from what I have heard. I value tech support for a laptop since its not usually something you can take care of on your own like a desktop.

My first Sony was crap. Software conflicting with hardware, rednudent Sony/Microsoft programs always fighting to the death.

My second Sony is the best computer I've ever owned! I got a z1ra maybe two years ago and it is slick. Powerful, fast, light and good looking.

I want to pick up one of these although I don't think I'll need a new computer for a while.

If you want a desktop--because you mentioned that may be an option for you--absolutely build it yourself. It'd be a waste of money to buy retail or from a manufacturer.
