Done some research on this recently:

I have a Sony Vaio GRT which was almost top of the range until recently. It's been great and the screen is amazing. Most clients comment on it since it makes everything look slick. (But beware, since web sites that look good on the Sony look not so good on other machines!) I have to check everything (colour etc) on CRT monitors just in case. The sony also anti-aliases the text in web browsers which makes everything look smooth.

Only bad things are the screen started flickering a few months ago - although that now appears to have "self corrected" so fingers crossed. It's also very heavy.

Recently (yesterday) purchased a Toshiba Notebook AL30(?) which seems OK although nowhere near as powerful or slick as the Sony but then it was 1/3rd the cost.

If you want PB comparison I'd say Sony was the best option but Toshiba probably close second.

IBMs are very functional and (I think) look good because they are functional. Kind of like a Landrover Defender if you like that kind of thing then the style is all bound into the utilitarian design.

It's really a question of budget with the Sony though since they are expensive.
