This topic is brought up about once a week so you can probably search and find good answers to your questions.
From what I gather, most people pick 3D packages by what they learned in school or at work.
You'll find that most architectural places (Trojnic, KDlab, dbox) use 3D Max as it's very well integrated with AutoCAD.
I prefer XSI but in the end, it's all preference and they can all do the same thing.
