i know what you mean Bottlerocket but at the same time i'm glad people are passionate enough to think hard about the differences between art and design.

on top of that, almost all art vs design discussions are initiated by designers, not artists. makes you think.

design is the pop music or ad jingle of art

Design is the spoof stain of a good idea

art vs. design depends on the project. when i approach an art project, i work the same way i do in my design process. it's what i know. it's definitely not about money in either because traditionally a patron hired an artist for a commissioned work, same as design. it's not about intent because some of my favorite design work has deeper meaning, usually something political. there's also fluffy art & design w/o deeper meaning.
maybe the difference lies in reproduction. an artist creates an original while a designer creates for mass consumption. you could argue art/design often crosses these boundaries but i think in general this is true.
or maybe it's about context & meaning. art will often challenge context/meaning while design typically tries to make it pretty straight forward so as to communicate clearly.
really, who cares what the difference is?

art = masturbation,
design = sex

art is subjective. design isn't.

design is nonsense for the masses
art is a lifetime process for yourself

in my opinion, and having given this alot of thought being first a painter, than a computer sitter;
the difference is in the amount of thought is given to the viewer.
the designer must focus on the viewer's experience much more than the artist, who can self indulge to his delight.

what is the diffrent of crap and shit?

Ell you nailed it with that quote. must remember that one.

art. a+r+t = 1+18+20 = 39 = 3+9 = 12 = 1+2 = 3.
design. d+e+s+i+g+n = 4+5+19+9+7+14 = 58 = 5+8 = 13 = 1+3 = 4.
4 > 3.
design wins.
end of case.

johndiggetty had a good response in the last thread about this-- forget what it was called

There is a great difference between art and design, everyone seems to have agreed on this one, but some genres of design are definately more artsy compared to other, I tend to believe that illustration and web connects the two

"art is subjective. design isn't."
Best so far.
And I don't like Rand's quote. No offense, but it sounds like something from a hippy 3rd grade teacher in order to unreasonably simplify the debate to children.

i disagree fate... i thought it was excellent.
"art poses questions while design answers them."
didnt somebody say that?
