that quote is witty and lyrical and all, but does anyone care to expand a tad?
Art questions and design answers?
that sounds like something a historian would come up with for a social context.
we are the creators, not the spectators. so whats the difference between creating art and designing?
is it the amount of importance we place in the viewer, and allowing that to influence our work?

design is not art; it's merely decorative or has a function, stands in the clutch of mercantiles and rejoices in the basics of communication theory and research. design exists because we have to sell things to stay alive.
the bauhaus plan failed. it created a fathomless pit between the castle and the plains. we have to thank them for that. Before them you could not tell what art was not because there was only art and it was getting too political. Politics are not the best thing humans can do. Presently, art is reinforced universally by its split from other practices with group-lead objectives.
art stands above massified false concepts from design and ideology and you can only grasp it individually as a "thing". Good art is sublime. In this sense, there is no communication whatsoever, which tells us Kant is right so far.
Of course, both things can be done by the same person, but art is much more difficult.

art = $
design = $$$$$

This is the quote I was referring to: "design makes the world smaller. more simple.
art makes the world larger, and more complex."
The other one, where art asks questions and design answers them, is actually sharp.

don't those two quotes agree with each other?
....or are we striving for a poetic (artisitic) answer to the equation??
if so, the choice of which you like more is completely subjective.

why is the difference so important btw? as in why is this actually a discussion?

"art poses questions while design answers them."
I like that.
To expand, I think art has more of a self expressive approach to it. Design seems to be more information based, thought oriented.
regardless the line is thin between them, and only the individual can really decide for themselves.
I feel like Ive been walking the line for years.
- mogwai0
the difference becomes very important when you do both.
- rabattski0
really mogwai? why? why does that influence what you do? does knowing the difference make you a better person or a better artist? i just do what i do. i'm not wondering why or how or what or how it's categorized etc.

(Mar 3 05, 12:55)this is more relevant than antiprogram having an affair.
- rabattski0

in art you rarely have to typeset a menu with the heading "Whetting The Appetite"

well rabattski thats you, and watch your tone.
the difference is something i struggle with, because for me the two dont mix.
i do corporate visualization and design at work in front of a box. i go home and i paint and the two worlds have not collided for me yet. the more i understand the elusive difference, the better chance one day i can merge the two,

Design is restrained creativity.
Unlike artists, designers have to follow set perameters in the work they do.

If you do both you should be able to figure out the answer all by yourself. You shouldn't really let other people define things like this for you.

watch my tone?
