art vs. design depends on the project. when i approach an art project, i work the same way i do in my design process. it's what i know. it's definitely not about money in either because traditionally a patron hired an artist for a commissioned work, same as design. it's not about intent because some of my favorite design work has deeper meaning, usually something political. there's also fluffy art & design w/o deeper meaning.
maybe the difference lies in reproduction. an artist creates an original while a designer creates for mass consumption. you could argue art/design often crosses these boundaries but i think in general this is true.
or maybe it's about context & meaning. art will often challenge context/meaning while design typically tries to make it pretty straight forward so as to communicate clearly.
really, who cares what the difference is?
