It's nice to see some people calling this bullshit for what it is: a rip-off.

I *am* a "money-first" designer. As in, I don't design unless I get money first. This isn't my hobby, it's my career. It's how I pay my bills and buy my food. If you don't view it that way then do us all a favour and get out of the industry. If you don't know the value of your work, or you think the value of your work is zero then quit. You don't deserve to be in the industry.

If I have spare time then I've got a million personal projects that I'd love to finally get around to doing.

IDp, I have a question for you. What if tomorrow I were to call Manning Hall & Salisbury to explain to them that their designer was more than happy to work for free. How would they feel about that?

    Don't enter "contests", ever.

Hah! I am finding brothers and sisters in arms here.

My issue with contests is the notion that we-designers are to be the answer to everything. We are not. We are part of the equation.

It is just that people have specialized in this field. Experts, I dare say. But experts only deliver what you ask them to deliver. We do not have all the answers, as a client is to be the expert of his product. We the experts of communicating what he want to say about it (or agrees on what we feel like saying about it). If a client's input cannot meet his own quality expectation, a designer will not - or cannot be expected - to deliver the output you so crave for.

So reading that this is done to assure quality just exposes that the person holding this contest does not want to do his part of the process.

Now it its called like it is (a pitch) the balance is different. So are the players.

    Poor Slinkster. :)

I, for one, think contests like these are a lot of fun. The fact that I may not win, the anticipation of the outcome, pushes me to submit my very best. I'm a designer & I'm not afraid to admit I love challenges like these. They give my spirit a big ass boost.

And if you think it's a ripoff, don't enter. Simple as that.
