yeah bonseff. it saves money because you don't have to print porfolios anymore, you don't have to buy more portfolio folders, you don't need shitload of stamps for sending it out and phonecalls for asking it back. at least in my case it saves a lotta cash.

yep but first time I went to cartys site didn't know you had to click on the right hand page to get going... I learnt that from it appearing on loads of other sites... which goes to prove that you pick up skills to use sites... and just because you don't understand a new site, then either you will soon as everyone evolves...
If nobody tries anything how are we going to move forward...
Not that the page metaphor is moving forward in any way!

yeah
i mean
we're talking about flexing your pointer finger on a plastic device
to move images around a monitor, right ?
- BonSeff0
an online portfolio has the benefit of inexpensive presentation, yeah/
but the main purpose it to get you hiredhence - making $$$

But mimicking older formats is how you build a new language for the emerging format. You have keep the focus on reconciling the medium with the message.

bon, i really am curious how much work you or others got thru their website? i get most of my work thru word of mouth, my network or thru my agent. they always ask to see work and i'll just point them to my site. no one has ever contacted me for a job after visiting my site.
- JamesEngage0
perhaps your site isn't very good?

James,
Thank you for posting your earlier comment.
There is no way, IMO, in the years there has been an internet that they laws of interactivity are set in stone, the only way to expand on interactivity is to examine alternative methods and take risks in implementing them.

that is very possible too.

: )
This site has got us more work than anywhere else.

then again if i can make money *and* have a shit website at the same time, imagine the possibilities and teh richness if i have a good one! :)

Make yourself, and your work, available. I think is the best advice for acquiring work.

Funny thing about Tim's site, is that it follows coventions set forth by web design...
branding on top

some of my clients explicitly require a "fucked" presentation.
look at fashion, is the stuff on the runways "accessable" ? no, and that's the point. It's high-concept. It has an audiance that craves pushing the boundaries.
the design rules that come directly from a history intertwined with corporate history are certainly useful, but it is absolutely necessary to understand them for what they are, and to not mistake them as the only/best rules.

good point dave.

i think it's important to "wiggle free" from concepts that come easily to you.
if something makes too much sense, it's invisible.

well there is that old adage that "good design is invisible" in terms of communication

How can "no usability" be an option, even for an experimental site? Even experimental sites (ideally) are thought out. The artist is trying to achieve something conceptually through navigation and content.
Usability, IMHO, is always relevant and the approach to usability depends upon the audience.
