good read if any one is interested on usability vs. aesthetics in design....pro aesthetics

James I totally appreciate what you are saying mate...but I just want to see teh photos...I don't need the site to be big, clever, or 'creative'...just show me the photos...get me to my objective without pissing me off.....it's that simple really...

I tottally agree jevad. I don't care if it is "different" if it fails on the most basic levels.
- TransFatty0
yes but
who wants to deal in "basic levels"
- mogwai0
TV mentality

You need to be a brave (wo)man to post stuff here these days b'jeebus

mogwai, that happened already quite some time ago. you can't generalize all websites. each website has it's own function, it's own target audience. and yes a lot you can zap thru but that doesn't mean that's dangerous.
- BonSeff0
actually all portfolio sites have the same function
making $$$
- jevad0
wow..and there I was thinking we'd actually get a decent discussion out of this without people getting stupid...

i think that if a site is self contained, that the content relates to itself then you can do what ever you like for instance http://www.superbad.com/ is an art project it doesn't need to worry about 'navigation' as it is essentially expirencal in itself
When style and design are used to present other 'stuff' the design works to amplify the content through association. So, the photosite uses slightly off the wall styling and navigation to amplify the style of the pictures.
Where as Amazon's designed to be legible and usable to enhance the idea of the sites credibility and security.
- mogwai0
yes like i said, it all boils down to how bad the user wants your content.
I know when I was younger, I enjoyed more complicated sites, I liked to be taken on a ride. Nowadays I want access.

most of the time it's saving $$$ bonseff.
- BonSeff0
the purpose of your portfilio is saving money?
//that makes sense
- JamesEngage0
Most people think a site is better designed with it uses size 2 arial, you can get past loads of hurdles just by doing that... oh and stck your nav on the left...
- fate0
Transfatty, I guess it's a choiceof : Are you an artist or a designer? Because if you're the latter, your job is to be creative within reasonable boundaries. Otherwise communication gets muddy and unclear.
- BonSeff0
opposite end of a photographers portfolio spectrum
(not the work, the presentation)
- mogwai0
yes fate, maybe the "art" of navigation experience is being driven away from the internet. we are an impatient and lazy lot us humans.
