love it, that's another thread about an artist in my playlist
- bgheen0
love the music. not a fan of him personally.

Oberst is so 1999.. what about Patrick Wolf?
i love the music tho.

Saw them in Raliegh. Would have been a great concert if his voice wasn't there. The band is great. His lyrics are really good. Just don't like his voice.
The scene kids at the shows are annoying too.

oh man I know. It's like no one is allowed to crack a smile, or dance. No one is allowed to have fun.

i love the music. i'm finding hard to relate to the lyrics as of late. still love the music.
i'm going to see him next wednesday at town hall in nyc.
i'm scared of scene kids.

maybe brilliant? maybe belligerent? I know I like the marching drums...
how about Tim Kasher (Cursive, the Good Life), saddlecreek compatriot? another immesely talented and intensely driven guy from Omaha... (not to mention, foxy?)
- zackgilbert0
love tim kasher. so amazing. rivals oberst lyrically.
but all honesty, oberst is the dylan of my generation. most people hate dylans voice as well.
new albums are so amazing. he's at his prime.

im just waiting for the drunks and alcohol to kill him.
- zackgilbert0
totally meant drugs.
- bgheen0
yeah..he wasn't looking that good 12 hours ago...
- warheros0
belligerent? so he's violent and crushing skulls?
he borders genius sometimes. i dig his music.

Sucks. I started a Bright Eyes thread last week after reading an article in Under The Radar about him. Thought I'd give the Lifted cd a shot, and it was annoying, and very boring.
He is being talked up to the n'th degree as being part of a lineage of great American songwriters - Dylan, Neil Young, Springsteen...
He may well be a good "storyteller" but the stories in the songs are just boring vignettes of moments that ANYONE could have. I've always felt the best songs are metaphorical and draw the listener in to figure it out, or find their own meaning.
I don't see a purpose in praising someone because they're describing the room their in ad naseum.
His voice sounds far too unassuring, young, and just plain non-singing.
That article was so off base comparing him to Dylan. I don't even listen to Bob Dylan, but after 2 listens to Bright Eyes Lifted, I can tell you that it's a total joke to draw that comparison.

well, mg, you said it youself, you obviously havent listened to much of either artist, so forgive me if i dont think youre very qualified to criticize others who may think that way. sorry. (and i don't mean to sound rude at all...but maybe i am.)
- mg330
You're entitled to your opinion zackgilbert. It's not rude, either.
But I think comparisons like that are so moot these days. I don't have to had listened extensively to music by either person to know that what they are to their generation is very much as different as night and day.
I read alot about music even if it's something I don't listen to.What were Dylan's song topics and the things he stood for vs. what the same things of Conor Oberst?
True, a good portion of the next Bright Eyes album is about him moving to NYC. But how does him moving there compare to Dylan going to NYC decades ago?
What did Dylan come from, how did music allow him to have a connection with people or speak out about something?
And the same thing of Oberst?
I guess times are just so different now. Maybe it's just hard to compare people nowadays to people who were the first of a certain thing, or always stood on their own.
It's like asking who today's Elvis is, or who today's Stevie Wonder is.

Trying to say that an artist or band is the "new" old artist or band is completely stupid.
I like Bright Eyes.
- mg330
I know. Like, who is the new Engelbert Humperdink?
http://www.engelbert.com/
- zackgilbert0
haha. i definitely see what you're saying. they are very different. and so are the times.
i guess why so many people are comparing him to dylan (at least in my eyes) is because of his ability to write such amazingly honest and beautiful music with such an emphasis on the lyrics. (plus, the unrefined voices help the comparision greatly as well).
you are right. they are very different artists. each doing their own thing. but its the connection with listeners that is where the similarities lie.
maybe i'm just biased. i mean, i've listened to both artists a great deal, and feel a connection with both. but dylan's words are often a product of the times, not making it easy to relate. im sure future generations will say the same about oberst though.
and i love engelbert! and i think josh groban is the new e.h., just in my opinion. hehe.

oversaturation
does he have to release every single thing he records
like 1 out of every 10 his songs are brilliant
the rest are mediocre

why drink Mr. Pib when you can have Dr. Pepper?
