don't be so hard on yourself. asking in front of the whole family is quite a lot of pressure.
next time though - bring a bottle of patrone. you'll get the words out in all the proper languages... :)

if you really want to marry your girlfriend, then maybe a good way to go from here is to talk to her family in private (without your girlfriend knowing), get their blessings and then propose to her in a special way. She'll be so surprised because she'll be waiting for the next time you take the family out to dinner or see them with her present
you could even propose to her with her family hiding near by. When she says yes, the family can come out and cheer. then she'll know that you've talked to her family and be very touched with your effort.

being 100+% sure is not the only way to get married. you could be totally sure about it, only to find your lives separate years later.
there are many different views on marriage - well, it's probably a good idea to find out what your ideal married life is compared to hers.
find out your lifestyle as well as hers. talk about kids. how you want to raise them. talk about what you want to be doing 5 years from now. talk about where you'd like to live eventually.
my ex and i didn't work out because of fundamental differences in our life views. we loved each other. but after all, i'm a city person while he's more a country boy. years later, we terminated everything due to such diffferences.
