People are against death penalty on the basis of empathy. They can see themselves in some situations, that's why death penalty was taken away from things like stealing, and adultry, etc
Also the values of society have changed that now celebrates the individual and individualism. And hedonistic ideas have become more central. So many societies' core value is the nurturing of the individual and individual life, that's how they see society progressing. And so rehabilitation has become more important. These societies are called socieities of control. As opposed to socieities that still rely on more direct punishment, such as death penalty, called discipline societies. USA is a mixture of the two - cos it has lots of asylums and therapy and psychonalysis shit to teach people to be "normal" but it also kills people. Hard urge to give up.
In the end both systems are there to control the erratic individuals that society inevitably throws up.

why should the citizens of california have to pay for this guy to live confined for 50 years?
I would love to see some stats about cost of appeals versus cost of housing a criminal for 50 years.
- Gorbie0
sure... and you're very well entitled to it.
i just can't shake the thought that humans are inherently good. and whether or not you deem them worthy of becoming a member of society again, there is a lesson to be learned from their mistake.
killing the person doesn't kill the problem.

I am playing devils advocate.
Sorry if youse are getting angry.
I really have no opinion on the matter atall.

killing him immediately would save the taxpayers of california millions and millions of dollars. so that problem is solved at least.
- Gorbie0
Kuz you're a character. :^)
by the way...
are you writing from prison?
- unfittoprint0
"but what kind of life is living in prison for the rest of his life?"
a viable option that substitutes the barbaric ways of the old world.
One should never discuss economics reagarding the rule of law. That's the death of justice, real justice, the pillar of a progressive society.
- Gorbie0
i'd gladly shed a few dollars a year to put criminals away till they're ready... and relegate killing to those who don't know better.

"so what if we kill everyone on death row today, only to find out next month that half were actually innocent. there has to be a proccess, or else we are no different to murderers"
this is my problem w/ the death penalty. though, if it's a must, they should be 'parted out' for organ donations. daft eh?

who wants a killer's heart?

i am not going to mix into the debate, but say only one thing and leave:
Death penalty; only for the backward nations.
goodbye.

Do you guy's realize how many women wrote Ted Bundy empathizing and even professing their love for the guy while he was in jail?
hundreds.
... that kind of just goes to show how many other sick folks there really are out there.
Is that really empathy? Or is that some sort of mental issue?
This may sound 'naive' to many of you - but it's because of all these 'issues' that are argued but never resolved that I have my Faith.
There's something that adds to one personal feeling of security when they can say to themselves, "It's not my decision, God will handle it when he's ready."
I've learned that I love life - And I hate when someone dies... it tears at my heart and makes me queezy... the fact that that one person will never have a chance to walk and live in this world as we know it.
woops... I just started to get deep...
*blares loud music and drinks coffee...
ahhhh.. reality has returned.

gorbie, peterson will never be released, so he will never be deemed rehabilitated nor will any other people on death row. they will just sit and rot in prison and never make another contribution to society.
- mitsu0
"who wants a killer's heart?"
it's much better than an owner of a broken heart....
*get's coat

ha no. just confused :/
dammit, this is hard. I'm back in the unfit/Gorbie camp
mrdobs line of thinking makes me end up believing in nothing. Except the reptilian side of the human brain.
- chossy0
Abizzyman I am jealous of you so very jealous :|
* I am not taking the piss you go on there and keep on doing what you are doing the world is better with you in it.
- Gorbie0
rehabilitation isn't strictly confined to being able to come back into society. there risks would be too great... i just think that with each death, is a lost opportunity.
and mitsu... you're fired!
