OK I recently d/l X10.3.6 and suddenly my G5 takes 15 minutes to start up! only happens one in every 5 times, and a restart fixes it, but still.
Anyone else getting this?
I tried pram (3 blings) repaired permissions from original CD and disk first aid, any ideas??
Thanks luvs

you're not alone. I personally have not loaded that particular update because posts here on NT suggested that it sucks. If I remember correctly a thread here said to stay with 10.3.4
search the PVN

Could be a variety of issues but I just bought one myself. Here's a few quick things to check:
1: Go to your /Library/StartupItems folder and check out what's in there. I found a ton of crap (especially Norton stuff) that when removed made my iMac run a lot quicker.
2: FONTS! Check your fonts. The more you have, the slower machine. I just keep what I need and leave the rest on an external drive.
3: Check your Activity Monitor and make sure nothing evil or unwanted is running when you're on the Finder.
Hope that helps!

i've installed it and have no problems at all. i'm on a dual 2.5 with 2gb of sdram.
the font issue could solve it. simply don't ever use fontbook, it's way to cumbersome and drains the system. i use suitcase (i never thought i would, always been an ATM deluxe person) and it takes abou a minute after th desktop appers to fully load then away i go.
it may be worth your while to defrag the drive also. drives always tend to need it even straight out of the factory. no idea why, probably some internat testing residue? your startup settings may be fragged all over the drive as you've recently installed a new system (including new startup prefs/apps/stuff) and could simply be taking ages to find themselves to startup.
i could be totally wrong but these thing normally help me most of the times.
good luck!

Don't shoot your eye out kid!!
Get a PC and you shall be worry free.
Remember kids, you can always build a faster PC for half the price that is bug free (if you know what you are doing).

BTW.
I have serious issues with my G5 since 10.3.5.
Also have serious issues with Suitcase slowing up my shit too...sux

#1 Defragment is not nescessary on a Panther machine. Panther defrags the machine automatically as you move files around.
#2
To fix the slow reboot time, follow the directions here:

no problems here w/ 10.3.6

hey cinder, the technique you've linked is for version 10.3.2 and it says that it's not an issue for anything above 10.3.5.
also, the defrag thing: is this really true or simply apple marketing. i've heard this said a few times but not from any source that 'really' knows what they are on about. i'm not being negative to you but just wondering if there are any real notes about it. i'm a little (a lot) sceptical of it. discuss?

10.3.6 and hassle free on my 2GHz G5.
i updated with the 10.3.6 COMBO update DL direct from Apple, not using software update. this was a documented issue on Apple's discussion boards.. also a few other possible solutions listed there.

corrupt font cache seems to be another issue, corrected with this:

It's really true... defrag is a waste of time... journaling and unix elminate the need-

always ALWAYS repair your permissions before and after an update. Run all your maintance tests- a good app for that is -System Optimizier X
http://www.mkd.cc/sox/After running the app you might lose some custom icons when the cache is reset but it's no big deal.
