most designer brands are wack.
- Donvitoviti0
I agree nick. I had a brand for a while but after awhile it really didnt make sense. Your name should be your brand I think. If you have your name at the top.. that is your brand.. You need people to remember your name.. not a stupid icon.

Solar.
It has good potential. My comments are.
1. Get to the work faster.. you dont need the splash page. At least bring the menu up first.
2. Dont loose the menu on the left when you click on a project. Put the projects to the right.
other than that keep chuggin and do what you want and think is right

seriously. with brand i don't mean a logo. I mean an environment representing you. Unless you're among one of few happy fuckers that can do exactly what they like. They can let their work speak for them. But of course every designer needs branding to compete. That branding should express your personality and ambitions. Kind of ironic that you guys hang around here talking about designer portfolios but still don't think designers need brands. Not to forget though a designers brand should be able to develope and take new turns as all brands.

Soler, couple of comments..
1) your navigation/layout disapears/breaks apart once i click an item.. and from there im only left with my back button to see more work. being able to click through your stuff would be nice...all you need is to add a header & prev/next buttons to the page where the work is displayed.
2) is the texture in the bg really necessary? it takes the focus away from your work imo..
the size the work is displayed at does it justice though, and i think in that respect its effective

an environment that represents you........
i dunno man..... i dont think so.
let your work speak for you...
- MLVR0
So nick, why have you even bothered with those handdrawn logos on your site? Why haven't you just used the standard bg colour etc. A designers branding is about image and your applying it to yourseld as well so i don't see your problem with it!?
- Soler0
thanx fellas. I think I will make those changes.

Werkburo.com is a website for the 'design agency' that is 4 designers... the headers give us a chance to make it a bit more fun and experimental. and you're right, thats us communicating our personal style onto a website that showcases the work we've done for clients. so clients know that we're fun and young and blah blah blah...
but i'm talking about individual designers, which is completely different if you ask me...
- DutchBoy0
MLVR has a point there, nick.
i do agree with nick on Solers site. Tricky nav and distracting bg.
- Soler0
I thought the bg was pretty insignificant. Maybe I'll drop it down 50% or so
- DutchBoy0
but what about individual designers?
i am one, and in another sense i am not. i prefer to cooperate. vormburo and the logo represents a company, not a person.

branding is important when you're creating an image for a company.
branding is not important when you're communicating your design skills as an individual.
- Soler0
In my view, when an individ. designer wants to get professional work starting out, the instinct is to put on a front— make a logo, give it a company name— try and look as established and pro as possible.
Is it a mistake? I don't know. I think a really great designer can emerge from any sort of website/company/non-company
- MLVR0
In my opinion I think it is as important for an individual designer to communicate their personal style. That is your brand. I also think it's important for a designer to keep it consistent. ie. business cards, portfolio, cd sleeves, note books etc. and make it as easy as possible for people to remember who you are and what kind of stuff you represent. It's very important though that your own identity don't take over your work but expose it better.

Looking forward to see your personal 'non-branded' portfolio nick ;-)

well, i wont need to express my personal style with branding 'frills' on my website...
luckily i have personal work (self expressive t-shirt designs, magazine spreads, etc) that communicate my personal style.
- Donvitoviti0
Your work should be your branding.
If people see your work.. they should say.. ahhhh.. Eddy..
Ahhhh Nick.

why the fuck has flash ceased to work on mozilla and firefox for me? Everything just stops and sort of moves if I hold my house down
- MLVR0
I think Buil is a great example of letting your work be your brand. but seriously i don't have so many 'free hand' clients. For me my brand is a way of keeping my shit consistent and to expose my stuff in an environment i can stand for.
