In my opinion I think it is as important for an individual designer to communicate their personal style. That is your brand. I also think it's important for a designer to keep it consistent. ie. business cards, portfolio, cd sleeves, note books etc. and make it as easy as possible for people to remember who you are and what kind of stuff you represent. It's very important though that your own identity don't take over your work but expose it better.
