anyone got one of 8 Mega Pixel sony still cameras? i'm thinking of buying and would like some user info. i've read the review at www.dpreview.com and it sounds good. i want a manual focus and zoom ability so there aren't many opts.

dpreview is great, but it would be wise to take the user comments there and on other forums in account as well.
I was faced with the same choice of camera but the noise and grain it produces was the biggest reason I reconsidored.
Why not try out a DSLR?

yeah, i was looking at the Canon rebel but probably won't buy any other lenses. i'm just a designer so i'm looking for an all-in-one camera that offers the most for a single purchase. we use photographers that have a clue when we need it. i really want the manual zoom / focus opt and nothing else offers this.
still, what DSLR's stand out to you? i guess cost is really the deciding factor here.
the new Canon Powershot PRo1 also looks pretty good. any idea?

With a DSLR you'll definitly get what you are looking for.
The total controll, the ability to change lenses and to upgrade later on was what stood out to me.
If cost is a concern then I'd say the Rebel (or the Kiss, depending on where you live).
The price of it should have dropped to the same as Sonys now.I heard some good things about the D70 too. But I just happen to be a Canon type of guy.
See if you can get some sample shots from both Sony and compare them with the other prospects. But don't trust the printouts too much. Perhaps it would be of interest if you could find a shop that would rent you both the cameras. Take them out for a testdrive, since you're going to work with them for a long time.

I compared all the 8MP cameras for months...I couldnt choose a DSLR because I need to shoot at other than my eye height a lot, so need the swivelling preview screen...
Ended up with Canon Powershot Pro 1. I think it has better mage quality than the Sony (less noise), plus it's smaller, similar fast lens...
But these are all compromise cameras...just wish someone would make a DSLR-quality camera with flipout preview screens...

what's the manual focus on the Canon like? is it a focus ring on the lens barrel? thx for you info btw.
- Peter0
Yes, your standard deal there.

sorry, i meant the Pro1 not the Eos.

It's not a compact camera in a sense (more then in the sense that it is compact).

Wow, my first "post". I have an F707 and inspected an F828 this past week at a Sony resellers expo.
I would not recommend it for the money mate. It has a great amount of manual features, but they are quite limited ('f' stop max value of 8 for example = not good enough in my books.)
I guess it totally depends on what you want to do and what is right for you, but looking ahead, DSLR is the next stop for me even though I love my F707. I think you would get frustrated as you got more and more into it.

I've always followed the motto of "a good camera is the one that gets used"
So my next one is going to be the T3, I also had a look at the expo (pre-production model) last Wed night here in Sydney, everything I need, small size (very portable), 5M+ pix (who wants to buy expensive large medias just to keep a few pix? and the chance you'll use them at full res is rare - like you said you pay the pros to do a pro job with pro-cameras), quick start-up, large 2.5" LCD, lens cover, etc.
I can't think of 95% of times that I wish I had a larger/manual camera with lens situation - even when traveling - want something bigger? walk closer.
After all, we do know our beloved PShop, right? ;o)

good points. i guess i was getting excited at the package rather than looking at what it can actually do.
i've got a Canon G2 at the moment that i bought when it first came out. i guess i'll stick with it until the DSLR's drop in price a few hundred.
thanks for the advice all.

It bugs me that nobody makes the camera I want, at any price. I just want say 6MP of DSLR quality sensor, a 2" (hmmm OK 3") swivelling preview screen, zoom on the lens barrel, and f2 fixed lens with around 4x zoom... but nobody makes it.

I have one of the F828's and I love it. It works perfect for my uses. I am not a professinal photgrapher but I do shoot an occasional portrait photo or two as well as a lot of producct photography. The Zeiss lense is big and fast, plenty for what I need.
And its built like a tank, not all plastic feeling like the Digital Rebel.
I have a 1GB Microdrive in it as well. Plenty of storage for a weeks vacation!
