With a DSLR you'll definitly get what you are looking for.
The total controll, the ability to change lenses and to upgrade later on was what stood out to me.
If cost is a concern then I'd say the Rebel (or the Kiss, depending on where you live).
The price of it should have dropped to the same as Sonys now.I heard some good things about the D70 too. But I just happen to be a Canon type of guy.
See if you can get some sample shots from both Sony and compare them with the other prospects. But don't trust the printouts too much. Perhaps it would be of interest if you could find a shop that would rent you both the cameras. Take them out for a testdrive, since you're going to work with them for a long time.
