i don't think you can win in a situation like this. If you don't use force, what have you got left against these people.... You can't simply give in or everyone with a gripe would be doing this.

thats what i thought by myself when i flashed on the screen what a fkn chaos?!
it'd be no surpise if this situation turns out really bad with a lot of casualties

I blame Czar Peter and Czarina Catherin and the Muscovite principality, and the Mongol Hordes, and the Turks, and the Huns, and the Kossacks, and Tamalane, and Geghis Khan. Oh and the British and Americans - obviously. ;) Humanity is a chaotic mass of genocidal conflict.

yes. it's actually the same groups of terrorists that are linked to groups related to Taliban and Osama's Al-Qaeda.
In fact i agree... when you look in far away past these states DO deserve their independency. As they used to be ages and ages ago.
it's Islamic extremists ruining it -literally- for everyone.

the situation in chechnya is caught up in old soviet ideology. many the kremlin fear the release of checnya as the unravelling of the union.

i have a feeling you take a bit of a too easy look at the situation, dave.
do not try to call Putin a scared little puppet for he is not.
try to seriously deeply imagine what you'd do if you were in command.

low - thing is, Chechnya received independence. But unfortunately the Islamists took over the movement - in fact many of the original Chechen rebels joined the Russians becuase of this. The Islamists consequently launched attacks into Dagestan - the heart of Russia's Gas reserves in teh Caspian sea. This could not be tolerated, and shit happened.

I had a very interesting converstaion with a russian academic when I was in the trans-siberian express. I was asking him about the methods of control after communism. he was explaining to me the difficulties in controlling such a massive landmass with so many divided ethnic groups etc. especially with a crippled economy and breakdown and redevlopment of a regime.

exactly lowimpakt.
it's 'democracy' in it's very first stage. it's not good, but it could've been worse.
- lowimpakt0
on the trans-siberian. not in.

u were on the trans-siberian? fuckin cool. That's been my dream for aaages, but i always been too distracted.
It's the problem of Empire. Russia (like China, and other massive landmass empires) is inherently repressive. Has to be. That's the crux of the problem. Nexus' of power. This is why i find Wahabbi Islamists most intersting. They are not traidional muslims by ANY stretch of the imaginiation. Nor do thye want to reverse history to a period of islamist ascendency (that did not exist in the shape they envisage). They proclaim a post-modern resistance on a global scale. They understand that if Chechnya becomes indpendent, without them there, then inevitably the country will fall under the Empire of global capital (which they portray as the West but really it isn't). So this is their counter-Empire, which is radical, new, and a clean break of any form of Islam of the past. Which is why they are fighting against Muslims countries just as much. That's why they have hijacked every independence (justified) nationalist movement where there is any sort of muslim base. Because they recognise, correctly, in the post-modern world, nationalism is irrelevant.

the main thing why russia can't let go of chechnya is that this kind of a break away from the state will trigger a quick disintegration of the federation.
there are already clear signs of this process as oil rich republics in siberia are becoming more and more autonomous. and the fact is that most of theese vast and rich territories are occupied by very different ethnic groups, russians are a minority there. so there is no other solution for russians except using violence to keep this monstrous union from falling apart.

--------------------------------...I wasn't on holiday so I didn't go the whole way. I was there with a charity that I work with. It was set up by a friend of mine and we works with group dealing with homeless children in siberian cities. so we were there visiting orphanages, accomodation centres, education and employment projects. Harrowing at times but an important experience.
this is a photo of the guy I was talking about on the train. funny guy. and the top pic is us playing football with some kids at one of the prphanages in siberia. I have tons of other photos but no scanner.
