i just bought an 80 year old place in Sacramento, California... my pretty designer hands are so sore i can barely type.
great stories from everyone,, MrRemote you ARE crazy but inspiring. Bookmarked you page.
nosaj... looks great. good luck with it. i'm finding the hardest part isn't the sweat you put in the work you do yourself - but playing the general contractor role and hunting down the right people for the jobs you can't do.
finding a roofer has been a giant pain in my ass, and they are 2-6 months out on installation.
windows i've had bids that differ $4-7,000 for comparible products.
electrical and plumbing are getting more complicated with each set of eyes that inspect the situation.
i wish i could do all this stuff myself. it's funny how in the home repair industries, it's acceptable to deliver a bid three weeks later than promised and $600-2,000 more than estimated.
i could go on. but.....
:^)

I'm amazed that people don't answer the phone, return calls or seem to want to give you quotes... I can't find a Chimney repair place that even has the time to talk to me. Man if we did that here we'd be outta money in no time flat.

Thanks Gorbie, I know the feeling of sore hand after a weekend of working on the house. I'm looking forward to a weekend where I can just sleep in late, go for brunch and then chillax in my finished home.
Problem is I'll be working like a fiend to pay for it then.

You have been busy my friend. How long did it take you to clean all that dirt out from under your fingernails?

My girlfriend and I own an old 1898 2 story house. It has been over a 2 year project (and still a ways to go) but we are doing all of the repairs ourselves (new kitchen, floors, etc). luckily my dad and brother are both contractors, so they help when they have time.
My heart goes out to everyone rennovating an old home. It will be well worth it when complete, but somewhat of a nightmare living in the clutter of constrution.

Nice job Gorbie! The last time I did some gardening/weeding I got stung 12 times.
I pulled up a weed in this rectangle wooden box and I pulled the dirt off the top of a bees nest. I felt this sharp pain on my finger and freaked thinking I got bit by a spider. Then I felt it on my shoulder and instinctively swatted and sent it under my arm where it stung my twice more. Then the cavalry showed up and before I knew it I was getting the shit kicked out of me. If anyone had been taping it would have won them Americas Funniest Home Videos. I was running and swatting and jumping and even once I had one on my back and decided to try and ninja roll and kill it.
I grew up in the country and not until I moved to the suburbs did I get stung. Too funny.
I called my gf and told her to rush and get me some ointment as she later said "... holy fuck baby. I've been stung like 40 times! I think I'm going into shock." So she flies over thinking I'm like covered with them or something. She damn near killed me when she saw there were only 12. I guess I scared her half to death. hahaha.
