Me and my girl just bought a house! We have to wait a month until we can move in and start fixing it up...the wait is killing me. The house is over a hundred years old and owned by just one family. Anyone have any words of wisdom when it comes to restoring old homes?

get real familiar with home depot or lowes. judging by the age of the house you'll probably have a lot of electrical and heating work to be doing. the big orange how to book from home depot has been really handy for me so far, covers just about everything...

Not saying that's what you bought, but the movie's a good laugh.

definitely check the electrical setup. make sure you got every plug set up with a ground. my folks place had some old wiring and when they got hit with a surge, a lot of appliances went to shit.
i highly agree with hitting up some home improvement books.

if you're changing any electrical stuff, make sure you know if its aluminum or copper, replacement aluminum plugs are about 3 times more expensive than copper ones (or more :( ) my last house had shotty aluminum wiring and turning on the hall way light would make my computer screen shake from interference, not saying aluminum was the problem, but shotty wiring sucks for electronics!

It's copper - 100 AMP. It still has a number of 2 prong outlets throughout the house. I'm gonna need to get the electrical upgraded in the near future. Gotta roof the veranda, fix the chimney and update the oil tank 1st...

old houses are great because they have charm and character that you can't emulate with faux finishing. plus since nothing is plumb, your carpentry can suck and that's okay! my house is over 100 years old and i spent a couple years to renovate it. yes, home depot got a percentage of my income and i paid an electirican for the big stuff: breaker box, central air, etc. and ghosts are sometimes friendly.

Awesome, nice house man. The older houses seem to be some of the only quality built houses around. My brother just bought one of these new houses you find in the jam packed housing developments and the builders have done everything but the right things.
I like that old school tub in the bathroom, and the view is superb.
Enjoy the house!

I've just started work on a renovated mill apartment....
my words of wisdom....evrything will take twice as long to do and probably cost twice as much as you thought!
good luck

that house is 100 years old and only ever been home to one family? WOAH, imagine the amount of deep rooted incestuoous evil is rooted into the very fabric of that house, and when the spirits realise that you ain't family, well sorry folks, but its ectoplasm time..
Dont cross the beams!
