Another thing to RJ's credit (I'm not trying to say he's better than Shadow) is that he does a lot of his own instrumentation and vocals. If he finds a sample he digs, but either the quality is shite, or if it won't work in the desired context, he'll replay the sample himself. And check True Confessions, that track blows my mind.

I haven't listened to much of RJ's stuff. Does he cross genre's like Shadow? Shadow's got some tunes that border on hardcore or drum and bass, like Stem/Long Stem... i think that's the right track.

RJD2 crosses over into more of a funk, soul kinda thing. Not so much drum n' bass liek shadow.
I still disagree about RJD2's original album tho...
Plus, shadow has done some insanely sick tracks for the Quannum mc's since back in the day... plus all of his old school mixes are tight.
Oh, you can check out his new video and some other tracks {RJD2] at http://www.definitivejux.net

"here's what's left" is my fave rjd2 joint. deadringer is an amazing album for me. i love his mix cd"your face our your kneecaps", its totally inspiring for me, i want to make an album along the same lines except i would be composing my own pieces with instruments and sampling them...kind of like twisting your own sound..its basicaly the idea of composing what u wanna sample, here's my working cover:
rjd2's latest is nice too, but i had/have to get used to it (1977 is the ish) and apparently he played some of his own instruments on the album in addition to sampling stuff to blur the lines a bit, which i think is dope and progressive.

Dude, how are you all even comparing Shadow to Rjd2? Shadow is the original, Rjd2 is just riding the wave. He's got talent, But he's riding the wave...
carry on.

That's kinda what I was getting at with my first post in this thread, but as usual things went off track.
Imagine that, things getting off track on NT, what's next, flying pigs?
- aliendn0
we need to just appreciate them both. yeah without shadow there's no rj, but without herc there ain shadow etc

that's so weird, without seeing this thread i'd just been playing endtroducing today at work for the first time in years - and everyone really got into it, they hadn't heard it in years either!

I'm probably the only guy who thought Private Press was a better album. Much more polished, you can hear the growth in shadow's structures and techniques.
And RJD2 is not a Shadow clone. Fools think anyone who uses a sampler like shadow does means they're biting...whatever. RJ has his own unique style, you can tell the difference between the two right off the bat if you paid attention. For instance, RJD2 has distinctive intro/buildup/climaxes in his tracks, Shadow builds up his stuff slowly.

I agree with you kpl in terms of Shadows growth in composition and technique, it just was not my thing, like I said previously, I feel his older stuff much more, for reasons of playability.
You're right he's not a Shadow clone, but if you literally took all their releases and put them side to side (including singles, remixes, etc) the path RJ has taken is very similar, I'm not even talking about specifics,(production style) more just in general. OK maybe this will help make sense of what I'm trying to say, Deadringer was more "epic" as was Entroducing, Since We last Spoke is more polished and takes a few listens to appreciate what he's doing, same as Private Press. All I was saying from the get go, was that it was interesting, not that RJ was biting Shadow. Hell, when I saw Shadow 2 years ago, RJ opened for him.
