greedy little pikeys..I hope they don't win.

Don't know, but sueing 31 companies such as Adobe, Apple, Agfa... I'd call it suicide. Or just a gigantic waste of time and money.
- zeroblade0
it's america.
in the end only the lawyers win.
- SLAZ0
basically they have made $90 million for other companies doing the work for them, but at the same rate, how much money is adobe and apple making off of them?? SUE 'EM ALL.
"Over the last two years, Forgent's intellectual property business has generated approximately $90 million from licensing the '672 Patent to 30 different companies in Asia, Europe and the United States."

free the standard...

Thats ridiculous.

tell you what -
whatever you guys design or program -- give it away for free.
Actually, template the entire design and then give it away to everyone to use for commercial purposes - so they can use it TO MAKE MONEY - but you be sweethearts and take home nothing.
It's their patent - their property.
They deserve to get what their product / creation is worth - especially from those who stand to make (and have made) money off it.
I often see people on here asking for fonts - then the majority of you bitch them out and tell them to 'purchase' them.
how is this any different?
I COULD CARE LESS HOW MUCH MONEY THEY'VE ALREADY MADE. It's THEIRS. Who are you to cap what amount someone is able to make off of THEIR property?
If they get richer... GOOD! They came up with it - they should take whatever they please as long as people are willing to pay.
- silencer0
woh there sheba!
I meant it was ridiculous that they're taking on 30 of the largest corporations in the world....
You sounded like you were pretty angry when you wrote that post lol
- abizzyman0
hahaha... sorry, silencer... just re-read what you wrote.
No malice meant towards you (or anyone for that matter).
I'm angry at people who feel that companies should be 'nice' and just give up their stuff for free.
It's kind of like the little Linux nerds out their who all about open-source and are anti-Bill Gates because he has the 'nerve' to keep his product (code) to himself.
It's his and his company's intellectual property. Same goes for these guys who invented the .jpg compression and own the patent.
You created it - it's yours to do with as you see fit.
- silencer0
no worries :) i agree with you regarding intellectual property.
I hope they get what they deserve. Wonder how much they stand to make?

Use .PNG instead!
- brundlefly0
didn't apple rip off xerox for the os and the mouse, and didn't micrsoft rip off apple?
jpeg was a photographic method created by the associated press to make photos travel quickly digitally. This company bought the patent and is suing companies that were using the tech long before the 1997 purchase, I think this could have been resolved out of court.
PNG agreed.
- JEWUNIT0
maya 6 supports png, right on time
fuck a jpeg
- zeroblade0
actually i've always thought the JPEG and the MPEG folks were a bunch of high professional volunteers in an established consortium and came up with those standards.
i know so little, eh?
PNG rules with the alpha channel though. ~: )

abizzy... i kinda don't like your Anglo Saxon voice -- nothing ever is that easy. And no it's not their intelectual propert (even though it's their property) as they own it but didn't create it. Moreover, screaming let them get even richer...? Very nce, but tat way (not necessary this case) of thinking creates exploitation. There are limits (or should be)to how rich one/company can get rich off.
- JamesEngage0
I agree with Abizzyman... after all, they only sueing because the companies were infringeing the patent.
- DutchBoy0
ok, maybe i am missing something..
but i think this company should be punished themselves, 'cuz why wait so long?
sounds like that eoleas (or whatever the fuck it is spelled)... they started to claim that flash-object (or was it embed?) while it's always been theirs.
No fucker company's like these have to wait till it's completely integrated in our daily digital lives before they take action.
that is what pisses me off with these cases.
- pr20
that's one of the things that piss me off. By now Adobe (and others) isn't just "getting rich of JPEG compression" but providing support for something that is a huge part of our life.
- jox0
I agree with Abizzyman, too. This is not about money, this is about claiming something that's theirs. Patent laws aren't flexible just because people tend to like and use that particular compression.
And regardless what happens, nothing's gonna change for us "users" anyway. Adobe along with competition would be exactly the same, only they'll be forced to give credit somehow.
This is business, people. Quit yelling like a bunch of hippies.
- brundlefly0
jox, like mellow out dude.
