I couldn't believe that they couldn't get the smallest facts straight though. Um, Jesus didn't die on a cross... plain and simple.

do you believe that there are people in this world that use religion to make money?
what makes mel gibson different?
very clever marketing in my opinion. you have a billion people already as your installed market.

Kuz, I'm a film connosieur. I also am interested in history and the spirituality of Jesus. That's why I went to see the film. I wanted to be inspired. What I got instead was a sour stomach and the feeling like I wanted to beat the crap out of Mel.

Geith - I have read or heard very little subjective negative critiques of the film. Gibson made a film that he wanted, critics are upset at its violence or what the story covers. I have never seen this sort of critique leveled against a film before. The film is what it is. Rate its acting or cinematography - I have seen little of this.

thing is people are going to see it in droves because it is about jesus, planet. cant you see that?

Yeah me too. I'm totally into my movies. And i was facinated by this film. So violent and masochistic and so sexual with the whippin and that. I was totally captivated. I was like - this Mel must be a fucked up geizer if this is what he thinks Catholocism is about. Like if u look at Braveheart, that was pretty violent too. With him being torutured at the end. It's like he's taken the final seen of Braveheart and made it into a film. Anyway, i never went into this film to be inspired. I went to be "grossed out". If i was Catholic id have been inspired. I'd be like "fuck, thats disgusting, but imagine, christ - it wasn't just a movie for him!!". etc... No big deal. A religious film was never gonna be in my top10. Cos maybe when u get to a certain age u dont look to films to teah u somehting new - but to illustrate better the things u already believe in. I dunno.

I have no reason to believe that it was Mel Gibsons objective to make money on this film.
Has religion ever been used to make money? Sure.
I see no reason to believe that is the case here. Again, prove me wrong.
Judge not lest you be judged eh?

"thing is people are going to see it in droves because it is about jesus, planet. cant you see that?"
Is this why past religious films have been such successes? The Left Behind Movie - not a big hit. The Omega Code - not a big hit. Need I continue?
Yet, these films were pretty much aimed at the same exact market.

Indeed, the critics are in love with the film. God knows why? I thought the acting and cinematography were crap. Looked like an oversaturated glob with poorly chosen filters and gaudy lighting.
The opening sequence is some of the worst cinematography ever.
These reviews sums it up for me:

Right Kuz. Gibson is obviously obsessed with violence. He bathes in it's detailed agony and gets off on it in an almost sexual way.

according to the bbc review.
"that as beautifully shot and well-acted as it is"
Both of these reviews seem to focus on questioning Gibson and the story he told. Not the film itself.
Again, never have I seen a film more questined for why it was made? The gospels are wide in breadth and this story shows a narrow glimpse of the story. That was what Gibson decided to film. Certainly to someone not familiar with the gospel accounts, this film will leave a lot of quesitons.

planet, how could I possibly prove that wrong?

You seem to be convinced that Gibsons motives are impure. I am curious where your thoughts come from - thats all.

the merchandising.
- mrdobolina0
Pins, pocket crosses, T-shirts, mugs, soundtracks, books and jewelry are among the items licensed by Gibson's Icon Productions to be sold in conjunction with the movie.
- planet010
I'll have to agree with you on that. The merchandising definately seems questionable.
That doesn't nullify everything for me though. And I don't know where the line is, if someone wants to wear a Passion shirt - so be it.

Asked whether Gibson will donate some of the money from the film to charity, his spokesman Alan Nierob said: "It would be out of character for Mel to publicize his private donations."

I don't see donations as anything to talk about. Scripture backs this up "Don't let one hand know what the other is giving."
- mrdobolina0
but didnt you say that he was donating 100 million?

Who the fuck is this Jesus guy you guys keep talking about? What did he design?
