for looks I much prefer the Passat-- but every auto mechanic I've ever talked to says japanese cars are way more reliable

just be aware that the Honda Civic is the second most stolen car in america, right behind the toyota camry. mine got stolen twice in one year, and i don't exactly live in the ghetto.
nice car, needs some more power, tho.

I got a 2002 MAZDA protege 5 just this past saturday. So far I love it. I will be holding onto this for a while.

Yeah.. that's why I'm steering towards the Accord, or the Maxima.
I had a Tercel in high school and had no problems with it. My parents had a Camry, with little problems. My buddy has a 92 Accord with few problems. And I've only had one problem with my 99 4-Runner.. and that's the Antennae motor hasn't been working properly for the last few weeks.
But damn if that Passat isn't a sexy beast.

Only thing I have experienced that was a little bit of a turnoff with VW was there clutch. I have had a few friends that have had constant trouble with them, hopefully better in more recent models. As far as nissan goes (maxima) they make awesome V6's but they have a pretty cruddy history when it comes to their electrical systems.

VW's have electrical/sensor problems as well, serious ones.

Ford Pintos have a fuel tank problem that cause them to explode on impact. Don't buy one of these.

Good lookin out Norvous.

Thanks for the heads up on the Electrical Issues with the Nissans and the VWs. I haven't seen mention of the electrical issues over on ClubB5.com.
I'd like a sedan, to hopefully get better mileage than what I'm getting now in my 4runner (about 22/mpg). But I don't want anything too small. I've debated maybe getting a double-cab pickup, but I just don't know.

99 civic SI - dope ass pimp mobile. The new civics suck, although I heard rumors of a '04 SI Coup....

I've owned 3 hondas - loved them all - only complaint are the CV Joints always go out between 30 - 60k miles.

I am terribly biased, but for good reason. My family has always had Hondas. My grandfather had about 10 of them over the last 20 years. My mom has one, and my aunt has one too. Everyone loves theirs. Currently I have a 98 civic coupe and a 2004 accord coupe. With that said, the civic has always started up in the mornings, never had any problems (aside from a battery, brakes and tires which is normal) and currently has 166k miles on it. The Accord is a blast to drive, looks really slick and does everything I would want it to do, reliably and well. The only other thing I would even consider is the Toyota Solara (the accord is my wife’s rig) or a VW Passat. The Toyota wasn’t out when we got the Accord, and we got a killer deal (imagine that, with 6 of them being in the family name!) on the Honda.
Nissan, while having really sweet design come out over the last few years, are still lagging in the quality, reliability and fit & finish in their new products. VW (and ask ANY VW owner this... they will have at least one story) tends to have the most asinine problems with their cars. Not like trannys dying, or engines seizing up, but all the dash lights going out at once, power windows breaking time after time, and knobs or levers breaking off. My boy here at work had all of his airbags go off while he was driving across the bridge, doing about 60! He didn’t hit anything before or after, they all just went off on their own.
Hondas are really great cars. If you want more flash, style or power, get an Acura TSX or a RSX. They may not have the toys and power that the other makes may have, but they are cheap to repair, you can trick them out, and they are really easy to fix on your own if you are so inclined. Get a LOJACK on it while you are at it. Your insurance will go down, and you won’t have to worry (as much) about someone taking you wheels.

Honda's = gutless and torqueless. And oddly enough, most stolen? I don't get the draw of Honda's. Sure they run like champs, but that's only part of the formula to me.
I'm currently driving a 99 Nissan Sentra. If you can get any of their cars with the 2.0 liter 4 cyl or 3 liter 6 cyl you'll be in good shape. Nissan parts are easy enough to come by and aren't that expensive. I've never heard of any serious issues with Maximas.
I would highly recommend looking for message boards of owners of your car of interest. They're out there. For nissans go to Nissanforums.com

the lines are blurring with american companies looking to foreign automakers to provide parts and vice versa. made in america just isnt the same. lots of japanese cars are being produced in the US and canada.
hondas are reliable

Before I got the VW I test drove just about every Honda and Toyota. I wasn't impressed with any of them. The automatics really wind out when you get on the accelerator and then JUMP into the next gear. And the sticks just didn't have a very good powerband to keep me intrested. My girlfriend ended up with a RAV4...the engine on that thing is horrible.
I guess what matters is what is most important to you. Do you want a car that will never break down? Do you want a car thats really fun to drive? Do you want a little of both. Or is money a big concern? All cars will break down...I've had a honda a couple mazdas three chevys and two VW's. They all had their share of problems.
So just test drive anything and everything you're intrested in and see what fits.

I own a '90 honda Civic, kick ass car! I just laugh when I see these dudes driving a german car, and we're all stuck on the same frigin traffic, the only difference is that I don't have a $400+ lease or loan, so much for style.
