Before I got the VW I test drove just about every Honda and Toyota. I wasn't impressed with any of them. The automatics really wind out when you get on the accelerator and then JUMP into the next gear. And the sticks just didn't have a very good powerband to keep me intrested. My girlfriend ended up with a RAV4...the engine on that thing is horrible.
I guess what matters is what is most important to you. Do you want a car that will never break down? Do you want a car thats really fun to drive? Do you want a little of both. Or is money a big concern? All cars will break down...I've had a honda a couple mazdas three chevys and two VW's. They all had their share of problems.
So just test drive anything and everything you're intrested in and see what fits.
