Of course it's a movie based on religion. If anthropologists discovered a personal fact about Jesus that was contrary to the religious faith people wouldn't change their religion, they'd deny it's truth and validity. Much like they deny the overwhelming amount of evidence supporting evolution.

"Baptist businessman Arch Bonnema bought 6,000 tickets to the movie"

Yeah, it's the astounding lack of objectivity here that gets me. Why not make a personal investigation of Christ's claims and the Bibles record of his life and works? I did many years ago. I took the challenge and I approached it in an intellectual and objective way because I did not come from a denominational bias of any kind. The result for me - faith in the living Christ of the Bible. I discovered out all sorts of interesting facts, like how the manuscripts supporting Christ and his ressurection are more consistant and reliable than the historical records that say George Washington was our first President (we accept this without question). Just one example. See... the tired liberal arguments that get regurgitated by the non-objective here are not based in fact. Find out the facts. Find out the history.
Keep in mind that the Christ of scripture makes it very clear that not all who do things in his "name" are truly his. Many profess Christ, but do not possess Christ.

we're you there? Do you believe everything that is recorded, remembered, and written? Do you support Mel Gibson's hideously sado masochistic agenda? Do you pee on John Ashcroft's head to make him stop lev....
err, have you checked out the Dead Sea Scrolls? Can you differentiate fact from fiction in the context of political discourse (ie. Book of Revelations as a political tract?)We do not walk by Faith alone....but by Fact and Conscience
J. Hoberman says it best:
"Sitting through the film's garishly staged suffering, one might well ponder the millions of people—victims of crusades, inquisitions, colonial conquests, the slave trade, political terror, and genocide—who have been tortured and killed in Christ's name. "
check out The Mission (a deeper "christian" film)

Faith, of course... but, faith supported with fact. And yes, I've spent a considerable amount of time studying reliable books on the subject of manuscripts and apologetics. However, I don't believe I could ever argue anyone into the faith that i have. It really comes down to personal faith. And I believe God has to generate this in an individual's heart. All I am saying is that my journey was objective and intelligent and it led to faith - much like numerous others I know and know of. I frankly couldn't care less about what the liberal media has to say about a Mel Gibson movie about Jesus. Though I will see it, because I've heard that the punishment Christ endured on our behalf is (finally) accurately portrayed on film.
The crucifixion of Christ was not pretty.

so, you WERE there....fascinating....and it was for YOUR sins. Faith is faithless.
enough

I you want objectivity why limit yourself to the bible in your quest ? If you approached it in an intellectual way surely you would not be knowledgeable of all scriptures/teachings etc not just that of christianity.
do the symbols and indicators of a historical interpretation mean anything anymore? as far as I see it the power of faith renders teachings and organised religion almost invalid and worthless.
p.s. I admire your faith but I dont share your version.

exactly, lowimpakt....it could be a cultural bias on someone's behalf

Jesus was a real man.
Jesus was the original special effect.
The original lens flare filter with which the horror of a godless, science-less universe could be illuminated.
Jesus looks best in daylight.
Electricity killed Jesus.

Isnt it true that when Jesus comes back all of the jews are going to have to die?
- loudubs0
uh, ......well, one thing is certain. you will see a push on behalf of our very own chicken fried christians to "rebuild the temple" in jerusalem. They're gonna need the help of Israel to do this....it's part of their very non-spiritual LINEAR NARRATIVE......
now, American people, do we want the directors of a very Dark Movie to be at the helm of Spaceship America?

When I was searching... I studied several of the prominent religions of the world. I concluded that folling Jesus is not "religion" - It is a relationship. What I found in the man-made world religions was a central theme - we do it. We achieve favor with God (or gods) through our behavior and performance. This certainly appeals to our human nature which desires to have a hand in the matter of our salvation. In contrast, however, true Christianity teaches that we have NOTHING to do with it. That we are bankrupt in our sin nature. That nothing we can do will find us favor with a Holy and perfect God. Therefore, God, taking upon human likeness, lived a perfect life in exchange for our imperfect lives and took the punishment that our sin earns us. So, by faith (not performance) we look to what Christ has done and the forgiveness is appropriated to us. The Bible says we become "clothed in His righteousness".
Humans could not have conjured up this plan of redemption. This is in stark contrast to the man-made religions based on "do this, do that, do these sacraments, do these 12 pillars, etc...."

i can tell you one thing
we can stoip drilling in Alaska to find favor with the basic laws of the universe
