ITS A FREAKING MOVIE ABOUT A FREAKING BOOK ABOUT A FREAKING GUY.
I love how all those of non religion feel the need to poke and poke and poke.
Again, it's a story boys and girls- a 2000 year old one that was told many times and it is movie material. Whether you believe the story or not- the purpose of ANY movie is the movie itself.
You dont believe in God? Good for you.
You do believe in God? Great here's a cookie...
We have everyone here yapping about guys in black trenchcoats dodging bullets and playing Alice in Techno-land,
or about Hobbits- 5 dudes fighting off ten zillion homemade dead guys with swords all by themselves-but The Passion is too unreal for everyone to watch.
ITS A MOVIE!!!!!!!!
And whether you believe or not an interesting story that looks like it was filmed good. Now go back to sitting in your corner laughing and hating everything you don't understand, care for, or that is not yours....

i suppose this would be better posted here rather than my new "i'm sick and tired of..." thread:

I'm sick and tired of people ripping on Mel and his movie. It's a movie. It's based on a true story. Whether you are a Christian or not, the movie is still an epic that is worth seeing. I'm sure my life will be changed somewhat after seeing it too - like after watching Schindler's List, my life was changed (still on my top 3 of all time list).
My other contention is that people are discounting it as historical without researching it at all! The only question of historicity comes in the account of the resurrection. Other than that, Jews, Christians, and better still, Historians that focus on that time period are in little doubt as to the events of crucifixion. You'd be hard pressed to find a reputable historian (read: non-tabloid) that will disagree with the events as laid out in the New Testament.
Whether you agree with the account of the resurrection or not is one thing... but don't reject historical evidence. It makes me ill to know that so many people would rather believe agenda driven journalists / reporters / and a whole list of non-historians rather than look into the matter itself.

i think it's pretty hilarious that jesus has become one of the biggest franchises in history.

"Sitting through the film's garishly staged suffering, one might well ponder the millions of people—victims of crusades, inquisitions, colonial conquests, the slave trade, political terror, and genocide—who have been tortured and killed in Christ's name. "

movies change your life during 5 hours, not more.

that's the one, lowimpakt, haven't actually heard any 'critics' say that as of yet

jesus was a real person who tried to sell his beliefs on the world. people were a lot more naive back then so they bought it. whether his preachings were true or not, only dead christians know.
david koresh tried to do the same thing, and he was crucified in his own special "modern" way. im not saying he was right, im just making a comparison. personally i think science disproves and/or explains stories from the bible. just watch the discovery channel.

david koresh was a rock star like Christ, true, but Christ was ,at least ,original in his approximation of Eastern and Near Eastern philosophy into a marketable product, but his interpretation of non-violence and transcendence is powerful and compelling, no doubt.

The New Yorker magazine's David Denby said the violence overwhelmed the film. "One of the cruelest movies in the history of cinema," he wrote, calling "Passion" "a sickening death trip."

The death of Christ is the purpose of the story- of the whole bible even, and beyond.
The whole story is very human. You dont need to be a believer in the water to wine, son of god, to relate to the dedication to personal beliefs, the will and struggle to do good, the passion of love and hate, the adventures along the way....
About the other comment about the millions of lifes taken in the name of Christ- let's not forget the trillions taken without that name-
The same could be said about any war movie. Belief in God's name didn't take lives, nor does it rape children, human misconception and human individuals did so.
That's like saying all muslims are terrorist, all black people eat watermellon, all Pollacks are stupid, all corporate offices steal money (well maybe) ...whatever.
Not that it's anyones business but I do not follow any religion personally but see this as a historical story, even if a fictious one it's been talked of for 2,000 years-
The trick is this is not a movie based on religion no more really than the series Hilter was based on the Nazi's. It's a movie based on a person and the "story" of that individuals life as told by many.

Transfatty, I thought you were all about love? I can understand how you can speak ill of this movie, but can you talk smack about Jesus?

"Already, merchandise associated with the film is on shelves and moving swiftly. A companion book to the film was at No. 20 on Amazon.com's list as of Tuesday afternoon, and movie tie-ins range from replica crucifixion nails to Sunday morning sermons."
