Should design studios have stereos in the office ? Or should people use personal headphones ?
Is it fair to subject people to your own peronal music tastes or should we keep it to ourselves and respect people who may not like to listen to music all day ?

the radio, then everyone suffers.

im in a studio with 15 others, open plan, and we all take turns in playing music.. normally dont crank it up too loud unless its friday, and dont put it on till after 10am.
I hate the sound of keyboards and mice clicking.

I think everyone should wear headphones because if I hear the Darkness or The Beatles one more time, I swear somebody is going to get a kicking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

excellent thread mate...
we have one stereo in the office upstairs and normally the studio manager here puts on fucking shitty funk or trance shite..occasionally I get to put some rock on...which the CD ultimately will tunr off in favor of some shite like TEXAS.
headphones are supposedly 'banned' as being anti-social...but I still fucking use them.
Music is a very emotional thing and it effects the way I work quite strongly - especialyl when I am listening to some absolute shocking CRAP

I have speakers on my machine and about 50 gig of music, I leave it on random all day.
some people ask me to turn it down now and again, but on the whole its regarded that it create an 'atmosphere'.
the trick is to play a bit of everything...not all this new fangled 'yuff music'
bit of elton john, the jam, some soul, interspersed wih some new stuff, I find works well

I can imagine working in an office where people are playing the Darkness and air guitaring whenever a riff comes on... in a David Brent type way.
They must be punished.

I agree with Jevad, that headphone and your own music in times of creativeity is a must...
but what worse is a team of designers sitting there listening to their own stuff and not talking and having a laugh.
ps some bastard has just put on some cuban hip hop and it is driving me insane.
the reason why I started playing music, was we had a few redundancies, and the atmosphere was dire, so I thought fuck it, went down to dixons, and started playing what I wanted, seemed to work

I guess it comes down to whether you have sensible people in the office who can actually respect their workmates.
Personally, I think headphones are the way forward. I like to live in my own little bubble when I work, NOT listen to Oasis at 9.30 on a Monday morning !!

good trick too is to buy a subwoofer and you can drown the other fuckers music out.

I like playing soul mostly, and that goes down well most of the time....
diana ross on a monday. great way to start a week

agreed keeza, its all about variety, altho i've been getting compaints that my music is too weird lately (i just got my old drum & bass cds ship out from home) but if you drop in some sing-a-long stuff now and again it keep the place happy

headphones. Some of us are constantly on the phone or in the conference room so it's either that or no music at all.
Oh, and there's 6 of us.

its depressing being oin an office with 15 people all with headphones, no one to cracka joke with and you run out of pens trying to get someones attention
- slag_you_off0
thing is my music folder is shared, and it has everything in, and people sometimes take over and play what they want

consensus terrorism.

maybe headphones is a more boring atmosphere - but I'd rather be kicking out good work and making money than listening to crap Michael Jackson jokes. if you wanna have a larf then take your headphones off - you dont have to wear them - or go down the pub /?

mondayitis mr black?

people who wear headphones all the time are just dull. although if you wear thim, no one can hear the newstoday jingle.
