"i think a lot of automobiles are grossly overpriced. should i steal them off the lot?"
see, there's the problem, that is not a good analogy at all... yet people use analogy's like this all the time when debating this matter....
were are talking about a digital medium... a unique sequence of bits, not a car.
what makes this issue even more interesting too, is that an mp3 is inferior by definition alone. it filters out sounds that are not audible by the human ear. what that means is that this digital 'repoduction' is not really a duplicate of the original as the bits are totally different. proof: notice how significantly smaller an mp3 file is to a .wav or .cda file.
what you can say is that each set of bits produces a sound which is strikingly similar to the human ear...
find the thread 'Open Source' and look at my visual illustration. it shows a similar example that deals with images, but it's the same principle.

why is a group working towards protecting their copyrights so evil? would it be wrong to go after a renegade printer making copies of books and distributing them? what if piratedsites.com started representing designers and sued those who rip-off websites?
i am not defending the riaa or the major labels. i don't buy shit music that fits into a predetermined mold. you aren't entitled to listen to this music. you must purchase the right to do so if you are going to obey the law and act ethically. if you STEAL you could possibly be prosecuted.

You're right Mitsu.
Funny thing is, a 50 million dollar movie costs $22 on DVD. A rock album produced on less than 3 million costs $18 and it's delivered on inferior technology. CD's should be about $5 or $6. The Music industry is bloated with profiteers. The cost of concert seats in the US is about $45-$80 this summer.

i totally agree with mitsu.

there's only one way artists can make money for thier albums and curtail the number of people who download their music w/out paying:
they really need to cut the price of cd's dramatically. i laughed when i went to virgin records last week and saw that most cd's were between $17 and $18 and up... immediatley i felt the desire to go straight home and download music just to spite those responsible for this.
what does the cost need to be? it needs to outweigh or equal the time or cost of going through the trouble of downloading an entire album. a price that would make someone say... hmmm.. i'd rather just go to the store and buy this album and copy the songs to my ipod later...
what i don't know is what that cost would be. what seems fair to you may not seem fair to others...

The argument is moot. There is no good reason to allow illegal internet music sharing. If you don't like the policies of the RIAA (i.e. price gouging) then don't buy the product. Find a LEGAL way to circumnavigate the problem.

ummm..I buy most of my cd's, now some that I want to hear all the time those are the one's I download.
Never have downloaded the whole album of an artist ever.

"record sales are not the primary source of income for artists... most of that money goes to the record labels. "
Yeah, this is exactly the problem. It's not really so simple as saying artists need to make money at shows. Even that is political with the pay to play b.s. many clubs employ...and that doesn't cover a songwriter who writes a song that someone else might perform.

"cosmo, psychiatry may be the answer if you are paralleling your life to the matrix. "

cosmo, psychiatry may be the answer if you are paralleling your life to the matrix.
- mitsu0
they are getting peoples info by threatening isp's with legal action.
- cosmo0
at times I imagine if we all are in a real matrix. And the damn government knows everything, when I sleep, shit, curse them out.
- mrdobolina0
Im going to start stealing everything I use. shoplifting from stores and all that.
- mitsu0
they need to make their money at shows... simple as that.
record sales are not the primary source of income for artists... most of that money goes to the record labels.

How is the RIAA geeting information on these people that they are sueing? How did they find this 12 yr old girl..google?
IMO, the methods and practices on how these organisations are collecting names/addresses..etc is far more frigthening and serious rather than the 'economic' solutions that everybody's trying to solve.
- jox0
one thing disturbs me though.
I hear this everyday here on NT; people are complaining about the X site uses the Y's menu yadda yadda, while they're downloading cracked copies of Photoshop and 50 mp3's on Kazaa as they speak. It just doesn't make sense.
- cosmo0
we basically can't do anything at all.
