We're all fashion concious, that doesn't make us victims, what we buy influnces what designewrs make, what mags feature and what we buy. It's self perpetuating circle. If we did subscribe to this system then we'd all look totally different, even in the types of clothes we'd wear.
I'm off out to buy a top hat, a wooly jumber, a skirt and flip flops.

Apperently noone knows Gola.
I do.
I love it.

Gola is a good example of how and why fashion changes.
When I was at school Gola were considered SHIT! You'd have been beatean up for wearing Gola. But now they have nostalgic value, and more than that, hardley anyone wears them. Therefore you can follow fashion by wearing trainers, but express your uniquness and identity by wearing something unusual and 'uncool'.

thsnks for the info Blo. Good marketing from Puma. Clever.
I was chatting to a guy who owns one of the exclsive boutique stores. He told me that some addidas rep found a vintage tracksuit top in a thrift store. Whoever owned it embroidered theyre track n feild number on it and their name as well as ssomeother stripes. So clever sales rep shows it to marketing. Marketing remake about 500 of them. exact replicas, donw to the numbers and name. And sold them off at $500 a peice. they sold like hotcakes so adidas made another few thousand, all with the little story attached to it on the label sown on the inside. The public bought it up, because they liked the fact that their, now duplicated in the thousands, track top had a story attached to it.
Just thought I'd share it with you. Interesting angle.

Wow, that's interesting. It's all about personalisation, identiy and authenticity when it comes to stuff like that.
I still wear clothes that i bought in the late eighties, tee shirts etc. I love the nostalga, the memories, with that addidas top, the memories come with it. It gives the wearer a past without the hassle of actually having to be that person.
The Puma article is in Creative Review Febuary 2001.

yep thats right sexypixel, after that they brought out a whole range called 'originals' - such as the 83-C track top and the one you mentioned. Puma did something similar last year with an exhibition called 'thrift' based upon interesting items found in thrift stores - and yes, a load of merchandising to go along with it, at suitably extortionate ltd edition prices.

Did anyone see that documentary on Puma's design department a year or two back? Their creative director was a complete tit.

I have a seriouse problem when big corporations are acting like they aren't.
That they care for you in the alternative underground trendy way we need to be taken care of.
That it is socially responsible to give our money to them....
Diesel comes to mind.
Now I don't have that much of a problem with it... but sometimes I just feel fucked over.
