tomkat, I would't really say it was a political move in respect to the two countries.
Lance did the same thing for Ulrich when he fell on a climb a couple years ago. It's a traditional act of respect, because the riders believe that "the best rider should win," not the "luckiest." If Lance was to be the more dominant rider on that climb, the other riders and other close contenders see it fit to give him that opportunity.A wonderful aspect of the Tour.

there is also the nice tradition in football. If a player gets injured during a game and the ball goes into touch, the other team throw the ball back to the other teams goalkeeper. Its nice to see.

yes I think Lance is a great athlete and role model for everyone. I hope he wins again next year.
