Me and the wifie payed a visit to this site on friday and were inspired to become vegetarians.
We are on day 4 now and things are running smooth. Does anyone have any suggestions for this lifestyle? Is anyone on NT vegetarian? If so, how long and why did you choose to go veg?
We did it because we are pet owners and couldn't imagine our cat going through some of the stuff they put these animals through. Not that we would eat our cat... you know what I mean.
Anyways, any links to site where I can find good recipies n stuff. I still eat fish, she doesn't. But for the most part, nothing that has to do with animals.
Thanks

fish aren't animals? the peta website has alot of good resources for that. http://www.peta.org

yes they are... but I am not about to give up fish. Everything else. Yes. I just started eating fish and damn if they are the best.
Soon enough, I will give that up to. But I don't want to eat something that has the same taste as fish and isn't fish. Knawmean?

make sure you get your protein

I did the exact same thing 2 years ago. Make sure you get enough protein, for sure.
Pick up this magazine and find a good grocery store:

We have some pretty good stores nearby. Papa Jons, Whole Oats, Trader Joes. I am sure we can find others too.
I will check into that mag. How do you feel 2 years later?
thanks

i had a 5 year run as a vegetarian.
you can pretty much eat anywhere as long as your not vegan. soon you'll stop to crave it so thats cool. i cheated sometimes and had chicken broth. oh well.
try potator tacos. those are the best. fry up some home fries w/ the taco seasoning and put them in a taco shell with all the fixins. cheese sour creme hot sause lettus tomoato. you can make a lot and make a potato burrito for lunch and you can also have it with eggs in the morning w/ breakfast.
also grilled portobello mushroom tofu. on a wheat bun with avocado sour creme and a lil mild salsa lettus and onion. mmmm you wont miss the meat.
try to cook full square meals. make a ton of black eyed peas and rice. lots of beans so you get your protien. especially for your wife. poor diet can throw her period off and also make it hard to get pregnant (if youre trying).
i also liked having silk tofu, rice milk and banana strawberry shakes for breakfast. a lil protein in the mornin and its quick.
its easy to stay motivated if you get yourself a cook book. that way youre trying new things and eating good food. depending on where you live you might find some good vegie only returants also. i have a handful in california i still visit often.
i sold out because for the first time im dating someone whos not vegearian. its hard to cook meat for your man and not eat it yourself. i slowly gave in.

Pretty good. I need to get more fat though. I'm too skinny. I feel like I have a lot more energy. I don't feel weighed down by heavy foods no more.
The benefit is that you'll never eat from a shit place, you know? No fast food for you. Unless you like McFish sandwiches. :P
I'd say if you live anywhere in California - you'll have no problem with menu choices.
I do just fine.

not true gorbie.. i was hooked on bean burritos and quesodillas.. 7 layer burritos and taco hell are vegie.
and at del taco their quesadillas are the best. and taco salads but replace the meat with beans.
i used to do a lot of replacing. you can order tacos at taco bell with beans instead of meat.
at in and out you can get the most badass grilled cheese animal style.. and even burger king has vegie burgers.. but i prefur getting a meatless whopper.
most mexica resurants.. fansy or drive through.. will substiture meat for beans...
at subway they make a good vegie sub.
man the list goes on. theres plenty of junk food for vegetarians.
- Gorbie0
hmmmm. I'll pass on that stuff.
I try to stay clear of anything fried in lard or cooked in chicken or beef broth. That's the hard part.
Mexican food without lard isn't nearly as good - but I still don't miss it that much.
I eat lots of Indian food.

yeah, the real benefit is a much healthier diet. I've been veg since '94.
also, it's much easier to get veggie selections than a couple years ago (i hope it's not just a fad).

Right on.
So it is pretty simple. The part I don't like is all the time you have to spend reading stuff at the market to make sure it doesn't have anything you can't eat. But good for the soul.
I feel good and have more energy. We have been drinking wheatgrass now and that seems to help.
Shakes are good. We also have a farmers market on fridays about 1 mile from our crib so that will help with the fresh fruits and vegies.
We live in long beach, so if you have anything close, please advise.

You'll grow a sixth sense for it.
I can smell lard from a mile away.

Well we took a different approach and decided to damn near go vegan. So all that taco bell and in and out are out of the question. I don't want to support those chains. They hurt more then they help. Not to mention that the food is horrible for you.
I don't mind cooking. I would rather eat at all veg spots. It's going to be hard. But I think it is going to be pretty fresh.
7 layers are good. We can make that at home. It will be much better. But we can't do it in under 1 min like the pros at taco bell... those guys are champs when it comes to making your food. I can drive, walk in, order, pick up and drive back home in around 5 min. All because of the speed and agility those people posses.

This site is pretty good for some decent recipes.

I gave up meat a couple o' years ago, not 'cause I believe it's wrong to eat animals but because I do not agree with the meat industry.
I eat heaps of beans, garbonzo especially, lots's of greens, tofu, nuts, and a wide range of fruit and veg. Eggplant is excellent.
I'd like to learn how to fish 'cause my diet just ain't cutting it. I feel as though I have less energy these days.

Oh yeah, you may want to grab an iron supplement as well. There are a few good ones out there. My ex takes a liquid supplement, made from veggies.
Also, her doc suggested she get some flax seed oil in her ASAP 'cause she's devoid of a whole bunch of nutrients/minerals.

Eat your spinach!

fresh...
theres toco loco on main in Laguna beachthats killer. they have the tofu mushroom burgers i was talking about. theres ali son's (i dont know if thats spelled right) in westminster with an all vegasn chinese food menu. dont be fooled by the names of the dishes. its all tofu and reaaally good. i liked that place when i first became vegetarian.. because a lot of the stuff tasted so much like the real deal it was hard to tell.
I never went out to eat much in long beach.. but im sure ther ehas to be at least 2 vegetarian resturants in your area that are very good. you live in a college town.
i'll ask around to my friends but i dont remember the name of it. there are a couple vegie only burrito stands in san deigo that are outstanding. used to visit those after going to concerts down there.
- shellie0
fresh.. no dairy?wild oats i think has some dairly products with none of that hormone stuff. eggs too.
- davetufts0
someone mentioned iron supplements - cooking in an old school cast iron pan is also good. last night, we sauteed some tempeh, brocolli, spinach, tomatoes, and cucumber in a big iron pan, added a little pesto sauce and some garlic - tasty!

i live in long beach.
i usually just walk down to star of siam or monsoon on 4th when i'm hungry.
there's also a good greek place over there with vegi stuff.
