You just described the new UPS logo, lol.

there should be more specialization in logo design...
just because someone designs websites or writes actionscript does not mean they can promote your brand effectively and without dramatic cost...photos...i saw that once...
the swoosh...i hate that mess...just type the name in all caps times new roman and you have a better logo...

I just have to react to the anti-times new roman posts. There is restaurant in my city called sprout. Their logo is just the name writtne in black (in times) on a white background. Their signage is a big white light box with sprout written in times on it, their menus (which are constantly changing) are just a sheet of white paper with the day's menu printed (out of word i assume) entirely in times new roman. And they have a big a2 poster in the window with the menu printed again (although substantially larger this time) in black times new roman on plain white paper. These combined assualts of times new roman make the place look fucking hot! They send a clear message that their food is of primary importance over all else. So before you go hating on times new roman and other specific typefaces or effects just think about their context for a moment. Whoever designed their branding did a damn fine job and expertley manipulated a typeface that some of you hate so much to create a very intense emotional impact, and also left it open to be updated daily using stock standard word processing software. Sorry for the rant, but i love that place :)

xactly. try it in black first. if it works in 1 col then it's a winner.

I do agree with Corin here. No "hate"s. It just has to be appropriate. Just like Times, bevel and dropshadow can be very appealing in the right context. The same goes for Comic Sans.

Logo designers should also be careful when using helvetica.
Being quite overused now, there's little "identity" it can convey.(oh no! I just criticized the use of The Font! Please forgive me!)

about six months ago i was working on a theatrical play. doing mostly web and video stuff. one of the largest supporters of that play was the city council of tallinn (the capital of estonia). usually they use some sort of coat of arms for there logo but they have strict guidelines for it. we tried to understand those guidelines and even asked the council itself but couldn't get a straight answer. so, we wrote Tallinna Linnavalitsus (tallinn city council) in times new roman, one word beneath the other, and used that as their logo everywhere.
and it looked pretty nice and appropriate... ;)
