sorry to hear you have a substandard computer...

I use 1024 on a 19 inch monitor. I find that higher resolutions slow down my applications for no reason.

thank you all for your input. really appreciate so much feedback.
thanks

Not to drink so much.
...shit , my bad.

The majority of the computer users have no idea how to change the resolution, thanks to the monitor factorys it stays at default 800*600, nobody cares about resolution besides designers

I agree with ribit about asuming browser size based on resolution. I have my resolution set to 1280x1024 but all my browsers are all roughly 1024x768, or whatever size I'm happy with at the moment. I never have them maximized.
My mother stops by my apartment to use my computer and she hates how small everything is so I had to set up another acount for her, then switch to 1024x738 when she logs in, then back again when she logs out. Pain in the ass, I tells ya.

If you have 3 friends that still set their monitors at 800x600, then you need to get some new and improved friends.

if you have the chance with your client, maybe the design should determine the scr size. this would be nice.

It all depends on YOUR particular audience... our site has way more users at 1600x1200 than 640x480....
...and someone on a 1600x1200 or larger screen is usually NOT running the browser full-screen... they've got a few browser windows over here... maybe some 3D modelling going on over there, a few shell windows... etc... don't assume you have their whole screen to play with...

I design on 1024x768 at home (stupid no spanning on iBook), and 1280x1024 at school (17" LCD). I have a peecee with 1280x1024. My next will probably be either a widescreen 20" LCD or aa 17" iMac... widescreen is so killer for designing, and watching movies!
Always design for 800x600, or use a trick to detect resolution.
People are paying you to do design, so you've got an obligation to make their site available to everyone.
If its personal work, design for a jumbotron... but i will hit the back button before it finishes loading

1600 x 1200, but I assume 800 x 600

have you tried using the text size feature on a site coded using CSS text sizes???
it doesn't work...and it's a royal-fucking-pain-in-the-ass...
I still use the font tag, just for that very reason...
as for the subject... 800x600 is still the thing... but 640 users should be able to use it... eg, no wacky frames that don't scroll and mess everything up for that resolution.

1600 x 1200 seems so big. my site looks like a postage stamp!

i use 1600x1200 ... but when it comes to client, i always use 800x600 as the standard ... check this out .. might help ya .. http://www.upsdell.com/BrowserNe…

all the grandmas are going to die soon anyway. They're just holding progress still. If they can't read the text "cause it's too small" then they should make it bigger on their browser.
And if gramma keeps seeng sites that are adjusted to her ridiculous resolution, then she'll never change the settings or get a bigger monitor.
That's similar to saying I should design with users of Netscape 1 in mind because there's a large population of African pigmys who use them.
Well, I say FUCK THEM. Get with the motherfucking times. And it's not even an issue of economic disadvantage since MOST people can set their monitor to 1024.

always target the lowest common denominator...
i design all my sites for the idiots who refuse to set their resolution higer than 800 X 600. love it or hate it, 800 X 600 is the most widely used resolution.
such a shame... but think about all the grandmas out there...
personally, i keep my flat screen at 1280 X 1024.
peace

I do what the client wants. makes the most sense to me. I try not to take it personally.
