I actually live about 15 minutes from CMU. It's a GREAT, GREAT school. If you are accepted into this prestigious school I would for sure take them up on it if I were you. There are many famous people that have come out of that school in the past, design wise I don't know that much about what they are doing. Personally, recently I had three interviews to work with their multimedia/sound department on a federally funded project called Virtual Agora. I didn't get it but was shortlisted. That's a tough one. I have a friend whos father works in their drama/theatre department and he loves it and meets famous actors all the time. Didn't a guy from the writer of Chicago just win an Oscar and went to that school. PS, it's literally like 2 minutes from University of Pittsburgh, so really their schools are combined on a lot of things and you have the Carnegie Museums and library system hooked up to it to.

PS2, if you graduate from that school you've just entered yourself into one POWERFUL network/fraternity as well.

CMU in general is fantastic. Like most small schools it breeds it own internal communities.. but there is a wealth of talent in all departments and lots of cross fertilization. I worked with Computer Science Majors and Artists all lot while there in the early 90's. Plus you can take classes in the business school.. don't miss this opportunity . The library is fantastic .. for a school its size absolutely fantastic.. Plus the faculty is actually quite approachable and always working on some cutting edge stuff.. no different than any other school.. just all the departments seem to be doing stuff at the leading edge.... Cant beat the computer connection.. the LAN "andrew" has been in all dorms since late 80's. Plus Pittsburgh is growing (http://www.pump.org) ... there are actually lofts.. lots of them..and the art scene is accessible. Plus its cheap to live and get around. apartments are dirt cheap.. for what you get.. even better there are several James Turrell installations in town..http://www.mattress.org/ca...
The weather can be greyish and the general population could be characterized as provincial.. but if abundant availableresources andcollaboration in the communication arts, business and computers are your bailiwick .. and you want to enjoy every variety of ethic food available then get there
some grads websites I remember ..

I agree with pagepap, that is all true. PBurgh isn't that bad, in fact I am thinking of staying here and yes, the LOFT scene is getting better and there are many all over.

thanks for the info... im still trying to wade my way through college choices... CMU seems to be at, or certainly near, the top of my list.

I was looking into Carnegie Mellon's Masters program. it looks promising.
- 8dot30
the traditional design students dont seem to have much to say about the school, and their work all looks very similiar.
My old boss is a professor there.

I just got accepted to CMU's IT security program and was wondering the same questions as you. How the students are, the scene, and the similar things.
- metonym0
BTW, frank -- you have a nice portfolio, esp. for someone you age. Run hard with it
- JazX0
Piperboy, I would take them up on it dude, you would love that place, trust me! ;)

i was accepted there as a chemical engineering major when i graduated highschool... 5years later with no engineering degree im kicking myself for not going there instead of RPI.
- frankvandive0
thanks for all of the input.
- JazX0
breeding, you should have went, your right, that school is top 10 in most categories. It's sick, not that they would ever accept my lame ass.

hey, I went to CMU and graduated in the Communication Design program 2 years ago. So, I can give you a good run down.
What CMU does well is give you a great background in thinking and solving problems. Going through user testing and how to take into account all factors and not just turn out something that looks cool.
What it won't do is give you an education where you *just* make cool stuff. You won't be making things like 2advanced and threeoh or Josh Davis. It concentrates a lot on thinking over exectution.
That is the problem I had, is that I wish the execution of projects was looked at more. But since I left I know this has gotten better. So you would get a better education than me ^_^
If you have any other questions you can email me (see profile) or you can come to www.besigner.com (will open tomorrow) which is a web site I maintain for CMU design alumni. This would probably be a great place for solid feedback from a bunch of people if you want. Good thing it comes back up tomorrow.
hope that helps
- frankvandive0
yeah that sounds good, i have emailed you with some questions...

I am currently a senior Art student at CMU. I can probably answer a lot of your questions. Email me.
I will say this though, Pittsburgh is generally cloud covered, and there are lots of fat people here.
- 8dot30
pittsburgh is what you make of it, if you sit around saying its cloudy and filled fat people thats what you will see. visit the city, see some shows and see what its all about.
godspeed you black emperor and black dice played cmu tonight, and i chose to go the "the oaks" theatre to see a documentary instead. there is lots going in here.
i am in love with pittsburgh.
- kutsie0
digitalswarm - do you remember 2 years ago 2 students doing a backyard wrestling thing at the frame or on the quad?
- JazX0
I agree don't rip on Pittsburgh, the fact that you go to CMU probably narrows you out from being a PBurgher, lol!
But don't rip on the city I love. :) It has a lot more going for it than MANY cities of the world.
- frankvandive0
well the reaction so far is good... i like what im hearing.. ill visit Pittsburgh again sometime soon to figure things out. thanks.
