Domain lost?

I registered a domain name one year ago though a hosting company. Now, this was for a 2 year time period, so I still have one year left. A few weeks ago I decided to cancel the deal with
the company and move it over to another place. I talked
to the guys and said I wasn't going to pay the bill I just
received, because I've chosen to cancel the deal. They start giving me this bullshit about how
I need to cancel at a certain time a year so "their server
doesn't sign it up for another year", so I "better pay".Of course I didn't and told them to f-ck off.
Anyway, when I ran a whois lookup on the domain name today, all details are pointing at the hosting company, which means they've changed it all when I refused payment.
Now, my problem is, where on earth does it say I am the
rightful owner of a domain name, besides the NIC database?
I never received anything when I bought it, except for some sort of activation e-mail and a bill.I'm never getting it back, am I?
Any help appreciated! (even ways to make the hosting company suffer)

there are certain companies that keep the domain name YOU regrister at THEIR company under THEIR name. So the domain never really is yours. So these companies can just pick out any good domain name.. but most of them won't do that. But they will win any arguments you get with them... dont know if the domain is on your name?

well, according to the nic database, I'm not. When I was still paying for the account, it was my name in there.

Sometimes when you let the hosting company register the domain they register it under their name. Especially when they tell you "FREE domain registration." It's their way of making sure you stay with them.
You can sue for rights and all that, but then you get into questions about the money you refused to pay for the rest of the contract. (not sure of your situation.) Depending on where you stand legally, they might be able to keep it do to non-payment. read your contracts.
If all else fails do some old-fashioned name bashing. Go to some hosting forums
http://www.webhostingtalk.com
and post how bad your experience was. Also call the BBB if you can. Tell them your story. There are ways to get back at companies who treat there customers like shit.I used to work for such a company, we got sued and bashed everywhere. Because we had more new customers then ones we lost we continued to lie cheat and steal.
not me of course.

who's the webhost?

post about it on WHT...
the site draws crazy traffic and a few bad threads that are replied to on a continous basis about a particular host can make them a little more willing to cooperate

we got fucked by canhost... our traffic went up from about 50 visitors a day to over 10000 a day for a 4 day period... rather than suggesting we upgrade to their dedicated servers, they cut our service, register.com sold our domain out from under us to canhost and we had a year left... it took weeks and much trouble as well as having to swear we will pay the $1200 bill in overage in bandwidth... it took alot to get our domain back... but really certain hosting companies suck...

wow, register.com really do suck
