Sometimes when you let the hosting company register the domain they register it under their name. Especially when they tell you "FREE domain registration." It's their way of making sure you stay with them.
You can sue for rights and all that, but then you get into questions about the money you refused to pay for the rest of the contract. (not sure of your situation.) Depending on where you stand legally, they might be able to keep it do to non-payment. read your contracts.
If all else fails do some old-fashioned name bashing. Go to some hosting forums

and post how bad your experience was. Also call the BBB if you can. Tell them your story. There are ways to get back at companies who treat there customers like shit.I used to work for such a company, we got sued and bashed everywhere. Because we had more new customers then ones we lost we continued to lie cheat and steal.
