the better the work the less you will get paid.
Luke Sullivan says: you will get underpaid the first half of your career and rediculously overpaid the second half.
I say the more you get paid as a junior, the less you will get paid later on.

"you will get underpaid the first half of your career and rediculously overpaid the second half. "
I hope this is true. Money is fun.
I can't really comment on this topic, because I've only got a couple years of experience under my belt now. But I can mention that the job market is indeed the shits. I'm having a blast, all the same. This is what I've always wanted to do.

Shoot, I forgot to make my one worthwhile point;
Find a person of the opposite sex who is working, and hook up with him / her. That's the only way we've managed to pay the bills and still afford anything fun on the side. Two incomes are better than one, don't let that silly DINK label fool you.

Absolutely! No way I'd be getting through in decent shape without my signficant other. Without her around I'd still be stuck in some sh*thole driving a beater car and not making enough to get by. At least between the two of us we can afford the rent.

i'm freelancing making *cough.. a shit-ton.
sorry dude. more $$ = freelance it seems.. until you can land a creative director or senior designer position.. hmm.

yeah, shut up already!! Vena's work is much more solid and mature than yours and he's doing construction right now. Or so he saids.
I'm not here to knock you down, but if you are looking to make big money, then you are seriously in the wrong industry! Be prepare to get shitty pay for a little while. Until the industry rebounds in 3-5 years.

are you guys talking about the web design industry? i'm in LA and it's not at all as bad as the way you guys are making it sound with the ramen and the "if you want money dont be in design" stuff.
or maybe im just "lucky" like you're all saying.

jking, roughly how much is a "shit ton?" Just curious...
Seriously, always keep looking.
I lucked out bigtime, with the help from a fellow NT'er...
Got my first actual web design job (sans college degree) and I started in the mid-upper 30's.
If I hadn't lucked into this one, I'd have been in your spot, always searching for a better situation. If you love what you do, stick with it.

In 1995 I got LUCKY and got my frist job as an HTML bitch for a company here in SoCal. It paid 37k a year. As time has gone by, my pay has gone up and up. My next job was at 45k. The next job I got was 67k and it was after I lied about my skills and got in as a senior designer for a major company. The next one was 76k and then the Dot com meltdown happened and people started losing jobs like flies.. Now between 2A and Freelancing for close friends and family projects I like Jking make a "Shit Ton" but it isn't about that. I got where I am because I worked my ass off, didn't get much sleep, and burned the candle at both ends for a couple of years learning all I can. Crap..I still do that. I could lose my job tomorrow just like anyone else. Like someone else said..there are TONS of monster talents out there right now that dont have jobs. Most I know are OVER qualified and the smaller companies do not want to hire them because they are afraid they will leave when something better comes along. Count your blessings is my best advice and always look over your shoulder. Never get comfortable.

thanks Shane, that was inspiring.
and I do love design. it's just not true that NOBODY's getting work, agencies are filled across the country with talented designers STILL working.. time for separating the curd and whey that's all.

I've been at it for 5 years and my wage has gone up and now I'm making less then what I did 3 years ago. I must be doing something wrong.
