I have to say that my entry level, right out of school, salary sucks. I should be getting paid more than this. But what can I do??

Welcome to the real world.

be ready to suffer for next 5 - 10 years till you get a decent pay
- kreydle0
Did anyone else start off like this?
I mean I am sure everyone does, but how long until the decent cash?
- MrDinky0

Never if you act up and think it's your right... You may suddenly land a brillaint well paid job, but if you're not up to it, it'll be very short lived.

If you're in it for the money then get out now.
If you're in it because you love it, deal with it and get the experience that you need. You're going to learn more in the first year of real work than you did the whole time you where in school.

I don't get why people fresh out of school think they deserve anything other than entry level pay. Especially if you don't have any professional experience.
EVERYONE starts at entry level. That's why it is called entry level.
It's a poor attitude, not to mention elitist to think you deserve anything more in your first years in a professional career.
Besides, if you're only doing it for the money, then your in the wrong industry.
Did you actually buy into the high school career guidence that said you would make over 60-75 right out of school?

Plus... you probably earn more than nurses do... now how do you value yourself.
Not to put too much of a dampener on it... I agree that your first year will shape you... I remember my eyes buring from 'major pressure concentrating' when I started

Look on the bright side, I just went through your site and you have some great work. So, once you get over the first couple of years, things will get better.

my first real graphics job paid 23k (plus overtime).
i know that doesn't sound like a lot, but i had a great big apartment, i made car payments, paid off student loans, credit cards, and STILL had enough to throw cash in savings.
cost of living was really low (and still is where i am now) so when i thought about 23k not being a lot of money, i just had to stpo and consider how lucky i was to have a solid good job with benefits AND A FULL BELLY!!!time will increase your pay. if you make 5.15 an hour, then i can understand a little, but nowadays, take what you can get and keep looking in your spare time. experience = $$$. dig it.
oh, and if you want a job in the south east US, i might can hook you up. we are lookin for someone right now.

Don't get me wrong, I am thankful for my career and job. I am lucky. I love what I do and would still do design/art with or without pay. Its just frustrating at first. Lets just say my pay doesn't add up to the AIGA survey of what entry level graphic designs should make.
AND I am learning a s**t load in my first year. Thats the truth. The experience is worth it.

thanks for the complement SP.
Yep, I live in the southeast.

well, if you get to lookin round for a new job, we got a spot open that will probably pay in the mid to lower 20k range. and like i say, cost of living is low here.
drop me a line if you are interested:
i'll fill you in on details (anyone who is interested)

The AIGA, while a good survey, is a bit off for some areas.
In Missouri, the average for my position is about 10-15K less than the some of the salary surveys I've read.
The fact of the matter is, companies just don't pay that much.
I'm not in design, so I can't use the AIGA for comparison, but the tech surveys are always wrong.
:)
I don't think I've met a guy in IT yet that is making what the 'books' say they should be.
Nature of the beast.

you can do virtually nothing I'm afraid, that sucks though, bide your time and ask for more.

remember in college, you were broke and had to eat ramen noodles every friggin' day? same shit now that you're out of school, but worse. mom and dad aren't there to flip for your housing costs anymore.
tparsons is right. do it for the love and the experience. you've just gotten out into the real world. take it eazy and enjoy the view.

You know, it ain't that hard to live. Money comes and goes. Sometimes you gotta suck it up and toss your caste status out the window.

What you should do is shut the fuck up and stop whining cos there are extremely talented people out there bussing fucking tables to get by because they can't find any work.
Be thankful with what you have - the market is still fucked.
