Bollocks to it isnt easy to run a magazine.
My brother is the editor for a FREE magazine which is given away in clothes and record shops.
The advertising PAYS their wages, the Printing and Distribution. They just spend their time interviewing popstars etc and writing articles for the magazine.
Create online started off like a 'community' magazine but slowly seemed to creep up its own arse and before long was all 'businessy' and licking Jakobs ass.
To me that isnt community-loving.If anyone has got the time and effort to set up that sorta thing, i think that a COMMUNITY magazine which survived my advertising etc which featured submissions/work/interviews with people WE WANT TO READ ABOUT (our peers) instead of business and money matters.
Fair enough some of us maybe are self imployed and want to read about money matters and trends but if you are a creative person you wanna be reading a mag like that to be INSPIRED.
In the end i think create online appealed to Project Managers and Creative Directors (something 'cool' to have on their desk) rather than Designers.rant over ;)

Interesting slant, Konspiracy... It's weird. I still got the impression it was very much aimed at designers. Maybe it tried to be too many things then at the end.

i stopped caring for create online ever since they cut the cdrom from the cover. it was the only way for a 56ker to try the latest design software. really really cheap. the magazine wasnt worth buying after that.

I knew that things were in trouble when they dropped the big"@" from the cover and nixed the cd...
I actually enjoyed flipping through it back in the day (primarily for the eye-candy & interviews), but noticed that it got subsequently thinner & less interesting as time went on.

this is what i got...
"Thanks for your email. Disregard the story on mbites. We'll be contacting
subscribers about this in due course, with various options.I'm glad you liked the magazine.

don't know if you have read this or not, some comments on Cre@te Online by the almighty MYoung.

Mike Young basically proved my theory on these guys.
I just got the feeling that that mag was just full of BS.
the only thing that was worth it was finding URLs and Screenshots of cool sites that somehow didnt make it on k10k.
and that hasnothing to do with any work cre@te did.

Like I said, it can't be easy making a magazine for us... We're used to fancy things on the web, we're used to finding news the second it happens, we're used to be on mailinglists with the creme de la creme of designers/developers... Add to that the fact that commercialism is/was always breathing down their neck and I'm guessing you would have a very tough job to do...
Also think about the impact this may have on our business... Surely non-hardcore-designers/developer... in the bizz (like maybe our bosses) might seem this as yet another bad signal coming from the industry. I allready hear my boss saying: "See, the dotcom crisis is far from over. We don't need to do that right now" or whatever. You know what I mean... Anyway... Just my 2 cents.

did you read my post earlier? - thats the sort of mag we need - pardon the thiefery of the name 'by designers 4 designers' but thats how the mag should be run - not by a money hungry publishing company - interested in profit rather than the industry/peers.there IS a huge gap in the market now which could be filled with something nice!!!

Hey K,
As I also said earlier, it's always about the money...
A mag by designers 4 designers would be great... But there's always gonna be money involved. A magazine needs to be printed and that costs a lot of money. A money hungry publising company is always gonna be involved. You don't see too many independent mags laying in your bookstore now do you? I used to run a small indie magazine (about dance music - 25000 copies) over here in Belgium and I can tell you it's not easy to survive without the backup of a large money hungry monster that can back you up...

good riddance to bad publications!
