Question 1.
How many of you develop for flash 6?According to macromedia, 71.7% of flash users use flash 6.
Question 2.
I have a "mini site" that can work with flash 5 except for one issue. I am loading jpeg's dynamicly. Should I, (a) say fuck the other 29% and continue with flash 6 for the dynamic functionality, or should I embed all the jpeg's within the file and go for flash 5?I would love to continue in flash 6 but the client wants to take in consideration the other 29%. the website is consumer based.
All comments appreciated.

i still develop for 5..
flash 6 thens to be buggy, if you have the old pulg ins .. and most ppl dont update it.. (like us)
- paulrand0
maybe an internal version sniffer that warns you that you need flash 6 just as you reach that section? If not, then pain-in-the-ass individual .swf files for each jpg...

A way around it is to convert your jpegs to swfs... an extra step... but means you can keep Flash 5 functionality... THere is a convert for Pc that converts GIF, but haven't looked recently for a JPEG one... Someone should do one though!

Hey fresh, go for 6.
If any of us develop for flash how can we expect users to take flash seriously unless they are forced to recognize that they must update their players in order to be an active internet user.
it's the same old story of supply vs demand. Demand can only be for the existing supply. It is the responsibility of flash designers to advicate the use of the latest technology, and thus create a demand for it.
Make a positive decision to stand behind the use of latest technology and support your industry. Fence sitters kill progress!

got to move forward. i believe all designers have an obligation to help move the populace in the direction of technological advancement - there will always be friction.
flash 6 stabilized long ago - move to the front of the line.

If you want to load jpgs dynamically in flash 5 and have access to PHP on your servers you can use the flashwriter script from http://www.stefanschuessler.de

I still do most of my professional stuff for FLASH 4! If it works in 4, why not? A few more people will see the thing without having to bother about their player. They can upgrade some other time, right now I want them to see what I made.

i second that john... we as designers/developers have a duty to adopt new technologies and implement them... and help software publishers make their programs/plugins more effiecient and less buggy... and also help them make the upgrade process simple for users...

Thanks for your advice.
I would love to stay with flash 6. The only problem is that i can accomplish the same goal with flash 5 or even 4. It is a consumer based site and it is for a client. He who has the gold makes the rules.
I have to conform to the client. Because I can accomplish the same results, they would rather reach the masses. If I worked here, I would give them some excuse about efficiency. But I don't, I just came in to reck shop and roll the fuck out. So I don't really care about being efficient. The more time I stay the more loot I make.
Luck for me illustrator can output swf files. So the output will be a piece of cake.
Once again, thanks. I think they are going to go for a sniffer. Ver. 6, Ver. 5 and JavaScript version.
YIATCHES!!!

DEvelopers are to busy finding the next best thing... when they don't always realise they have the tools they need in front of them. (even if it is a version below) It's human nature to be drawn to smething new that they haven't been able to use before.

I would put a sniffer that detects the flash version, and RECOMEND people to instal flash 6 but keep the site working on v.5, so you reach the other 29% and help to expand the ussage of the flash 6 plugin, just an idea.

miguelhahn...
that is a good idea and I will use it.

"It's human nature to be drawn to smething new that they haven't been able to use before."
its also human nature to resist change and stick with the status quo.

Are you developing an HTML version too? If you are, then MX is a no-brainer. At the very least, you'll have a more optmized swf. It seems you're not using video, so, MX may not be all that necessary, if you aren't doing an HTML alternative.
Don't worry about loading jpegs dynamically. You already got advice about putting them in swfs and using loadMovie. That's why macromedia is fazing out Generator. It just isn't necessary most of the time.
What kind of consumer site is it? That has a direct bearing on your target audience and how tech/hip they are.
Either way, you're using Flash, so it'll be a great project to work on. Good luck with it.

FYI:
there is a jpg to swf converter
http://spongefork.com/swffork/
not used it though

CybrainX..
The main portion of the site is html based. The home page is the only page that has heavy flash. We are allowing users to view all products on the main page through flash. Which is why I am loading dynamic jpeg files. The swf trick will work just as well.
The company manufactures computer monitors. I will post a link when we are finished. I can't mention who it is for NDA purposes.
The company is pretty "tech savy" but doesn't want to ignore anyone.
The project is awsome and is allowing me to expand my flash knowledge. I am doing this solo style. No team to work with. Just me and the VP of marketing. So I have about 98% creative control.
Just to note, I have never had an issue with the size of the SWF files. I usually do not go over 200k. But I like to use external flash movies. It only makes sense. Putting everything inside of 1 SWF files is like making 1 HUGE GIF file. Keep basic webdev practice in mind when you develop for flash. Just like you load various jpeg, gif, png files on 1 page. You should do the same with flash. That will avoid a lot of the issues with load time and files size.
WORD UP!. Progression is key, but you do have to keep human nature in mind. If something is to difficult, chances are, the audience will not respond.
The only major difference I see in Ver.6 and Ver.5 is video. I don't use components to much so I wouldn't have that issue to deal with. Both are great. MX is better to dev. with. But player 5 is just as good and has a larger audience.
Come on brothas n sistas, we all want to move forward but we can't be ignorant about it. It's simple logic.
